Bandits Flee Forests, Release Victims In Niger

Bandits Flee Forests, Release Victims In Niger

Following military onslaught in forests in Niger State, many bandits have started fleeing the forests and releasing some  abductees, our correspondent gathered yesterday.

This came on the heels of the disclaimer by the Niger State police command that no notorious bandit had declared himself  governor in the state.

LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that  some of  the farmers abducted about five months ago around Kaffin Korro, Munya and some parts of Shiroro are being released.

It was learnt that the bandits who are anticipating the onslaught following the recent crash of a military helicopter linked to the Gide Dogo bandits group are retreating to neighbouring states.

A source from the communities around Shiroro axis where the bandits had held sway in the past three weeks said they were no longer coming out bracingly to operate  as they did in previous weeks.

Meanwhile,  the state police  command  in a statement by its spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, said no bandit had declared himself governor as reported in some mainstream and social media.

He said; “The command wishes to state categorically with all sense of responsibility that such publication is false in its entirety, and it only exists in the figment of the imagination of the author.

“The joint security teams in the state in collaboration with the state government are working assiduously to address the security challenges at hand, while tactical teams are placed at strategic locations within the volatile areas for security coverage.”

He called for calm and advised members of the public to ignore the publication, as it was an attempt by mischief makers to cause panic.

NFF sacks Peseiro as Super Eagles coach

NFF sacks Peseiro as Super Eagles coach

SCORENigeria can exclusively report that the Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided not to extend the contract of Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles coach.

This followed a virtual Executive Committee meeting on Friday chaired by NFF President Ibrahim Gusau.

A top official informed SCORENigeria that the decision was taken after negotiations for a new contract with Peseiro collapsed.

“The Board has opted not to extend the contract of Peseiro,” he disclosed.

“There was no headway in negotiations with the coach and as such it was decided we part ways.”

It was gathered that one of the vexed contractual issues has to do with Peseiro’s monthly salary of $70,000, which the NFF asked he should take a pay cut as they do not have the finances to bear such an overhead.

Peseiro’s one-year contract ran out at the end of July 2023.

A renewal was predicated on the performance of the Super Eagles at the 2023 AFCON, which has now been delayed till January 2024.

The NFF have therefore claimed force majeure not to work again with the 63-year-old Portuguese coach.

Peseiro was appointed Eagles coach in May 2022 and he qualified the country to the 2023 AFCON with a round of matches to spare.

However, his record and the football played by the team were far from convincing leading to calls for him to be sacked.

In his absence, a caretaker coach will be appointed for a final 2023 AFCON qualifier against Sao Tome & Principe on September 10 in Uyo.

It is expected that a substantive coach will then be hired before the Super Eagles first two rounds of 2026 World Cup qualifying matches in November.

Nigeria are drawn against South Africa, Benin Republic, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Uganda for a place at the expanded 2026 World Cup to be hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Purported error on Tinubu’s certificate validates my discovery – Atiku

Purported error on Tinubu’s certificate validates my discovery – Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has said the purported errors discovered in the certificate of President Bola Tinubu validate his discovery.

DAILY POST reports that Tinubu’s lawyers had on Wednesday, in response to the petition of Atiku in a federal court in Chicago, Illinois, United States, agreed that there are errors in the academic certificate presented to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the President, and blamed those errors on the clerk of the Chicago State University (CSU).

In a statement issued on Saturday, the former vice president said documents submitted by his lawyers in the United States and Nigeria showed disturbing discrepancies and circumstantial fallacies in Tinubu’s academic records from the university.

One of the documents, for instance, is the certified true copy of the certificate submitted by Tinubu to INEC on 17th June 2022, and according to Atiku’s lawyers, “this, purportedly, is the certificate issued to him by Chicago State University (“CSU”) showing that he attended the school, and evidencing the degree he was awarded.

“In another document is a copy of a letter dated September 22, 2022 from Mr. Caleb Westberg, the Registrar of CSU attaching a copy of the certificate issued to Bola Tinubu in recognition of the degree he was awarded by the university.

“There is another document, which is a copy of the certificate forwarded by Mr. Westberg, as mentioned above, in response to a subpoena that was issued to CSU in respect of Bola Tinubu’s academic qualifications and achievements.

“There is also a copy of the bio of Dr. Niva Lubin-Johnson. Dr. Lubin-Johnson was the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of CSU from January 2001 to December 2002.

“Also is a copy of the bio of Dr. Elnora D. Daniel. Dr. Daniel was the President of CSU from 1998 to 2008.”

However, the interesting thing upon further examination of these documents is that while they all speak to the same subject, Tinubu’s academic qualifications from the Chicago State University, they all bear different details.

They Framed Me, I Am Not A Criminal"- Akeem Owonikoko, A Community Hero In Ososa, Ogun State Cries Out To Nigerians For Help

"They Framed Me, I Am Not A Criminal"- Akeem Owonikoko, A Community Hero In Ososa, Ogun State Cries Out To Nigerians For Help

Akeem Owonikoko, a respected and trusted member of the So Safe Corp in Ososa, Ogun State,  is being accused by the Ogun State police of being an armed robber and a possessor of illegal weapons. However, the truth maybe far from what the viral videos and sensational headlines have portrayed. Akeem Owonikoko and his community are insisting he is not a criminal, but a community hero who has dedicated his life to ensuring peace and security in his beloved town.

In an exclusive and emotional video interview with the Yoruba Broadcasting Network, Akeem Owonikoko broke his silence and told his side of the story. He revealed how he became a victim of circumstances and how he was framed by some unscrupulous elements who wanted to tarnish his reputation and destroy his livelihood.

Akeem Owonikoko explained that he joined the So Safe Corp in 2014 after witnessing the havoc caused by a notorious cult group called Eye confraternity in his hospitality business. He said he bought a vigilante uniform and security gadgets, such as pepper spray, shockers, and jacklives, to equip himself for the task of protecting his community. He also joined other security groups like Agbekoya and Amotekun corps, where he worked with other volunteers to combat crime and maintain order.

He narrated how he acquired his first gun from a hunter named Victor in 2017, but later modified it to a smaller size because it was faulty. He said he used the gun only for self-defense and never for any illegal activity. He also recounted how he worked closely with various police departments and different DPOs, who recognized his efforts. He was appointed  as the unit commandant at Ososa of vigilante corps.

The people of Ososa have also come out in full support of Akeem Owonikoko, testifying to his character and integrity. They have described him as a diligent, dedicated, and loyal member of the So Safe Corp, who has always been at the forefront of fighting crime and ensuring peace in the community. They have expressed their shock and disbelief at the allegations leveled against him, saying that they are baseless and fabricated.

If Akeem's side of the story is paid attention to and found to be clear: Akeem Owonikoko is not an armed robber, but a community hero who has been wrongly accused and unjustly detained. He deserves justice and freedom, not condemnation and imprisonment. He deserves the gratitude and admiration of his community, not the scorn and ridicule of the public. He deserves to be heard and believed, not silenced and dismissed.

As Akeem Owonikoko awaits his fate, he appeals to the authorities and the media to investigate his case thoroughly and fairly. He also pleads with the public to not judge him by what they see or hear on the internet, but by what they know about him from his years of service to his community. He said in tears: "They framed me, I am not a criminal. I am a peacekeeper, a community hero. Please help me clear my name."

26-Year-Old Suspected Ritualist Confesses Reason for Daily Bathing with Human Head

Franklin Akinyosuyi, a 26-year-old individual under suspicion of engaging in ritualistic activities, has provided insight into his daily practice of bathing with a human head.

Akinyosuyi disclosed that he acquired the human skull and various other body parts from an herbalist located in Osun state.

The accused, who was publicly displayed along with other alleged criminals by the Ondo state police command over the weekend, shared during an interview that he followed the instructions of the herbalist to enhance his struggling photography and boutique businesses. These enterprises were reportedly undergoing significant challenges.

According to him ” I am a photographer and I own a boutique as well. It was last year that my uncle took me to a herbalist.

“I explained to him that my business wasn’t moving well, so he asked me to pay N200,000 to make concoction for me which I paid within three weeks.

“After he was done, he called me to come pick it and that was last year November. He directed that I should be bathing with the human head every Thursday at exactly 1am.

” I used it for a month but didn’t see any difference in my business. So, I had to call the herbalist and told him to refund my money.

“I also asked him to come and pick the human head as well but he refused to come and pick it, but he had started refunding my money because he already sent me N20,000.

” So, on that faithful day, I decided to go and throw it away, so I dropped it at my backyard. Unfortunately, I went out and before I could return, my landlord’s children saw it, informed their father and they ultimately called the police.

“After we were arrested, the herbalist claimed that he paid someone to get the human head”, the suspect said.

Addressing the matter concerning the individual suspected of engaging in ritualistic activities, Funmi Odunlami, the police spokesperson, informed that a human skull was discovered in the possession of the said individual. Following subsequent questioning and investigation, this led to the apprehension of an evangelist named Oyegoke Dare, who provided both the human skull and other fetish items to the aforementioned suspect.

She added that ” one Oyelade Sarafa an herbalist who also confessed to have helped in procuring the skull from one Asekun (a vigilante) in Ikirun was also arrested.

The police image maker, said that “Two other suspects mentioned in connection with the case are currently at large.

The comments were recorded at various points when they exchange loving terms like “my king and queen,” as well as love emojis.

The highway was reputed to be one of the most dangerous and risky for travellers during the whole two terms of Buhari as Nigerian president because of incessant kidnappings and murders.

ANiger Delta militants’ leader, Asari Dokubo has narrated that the immediate past government of Muhammadu Buhari engaged him to protect the Abuja-Kaduna highway.

The highway was reputed to be one of the most dangerous and risky for travellers during the whole two terms of Buhari as Nigerian president because of incessant kidnappings and murders.

But in the twilight of the immediate past government, reports of violence crashed significantly, according to Daily Trust.
When he paid a visit to President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock last month, Dokubo had claimed that his footmen and combatants were responsible for the axis's stability.

But in a recently released video, Dokubo boasted that his intervention was what restored peace and tranquility to the highway.

He stated that while he was not on good terms with Buhari for most of his government, the ex-President recognised the potential in him and assigned him a critical duty.

He was quoted by Daily Trust as saying: “If the Buhari-led government can engage me to bring safety for the people on the Abuja-Kaduna road, it should be commended. Do you know how many lives were saved? Do you know how many people were brought out from depression and trauma? Have you ever spoken to people who have been kidnapped?
“We did not employ ourselves. The government saw the potential in us and knowing that we can deliver and they engaged us. That the Buhari government engaged me shows that they know who I am. I was not a friend of Buhari. For seven years, I was anti-Buhari. Buhari with all that saw the capacity in me that I am capable and the government came.”

Meanwhile attempts to reach Garba Shehu, Buhari's spokesman, for comment were unsuccessful as of the time of reporting this report, as he rejected calls put through to him.

BREAKING: WAR looming as Niger Army blocks Nigerian soldiers access to Bosso

BREAKING: WAR looming as Niger Army blocks Nigerian soldiers access to Bosso

War looming as the neighbouring towns of Malam Fatori in Nigeria and Bosso in Niger, which were once connected by a friendly daily interaction between soldiers of the Nigerian Army and soldiers of Niger Republic in Bosso, are now experiencing heightened tension and hostility due to recent events.

News Direct reports that in the aftermath of ECOWAS sanctions and the declaration of potential military action, both countries find themselves in a delicate situation. As a result, Nigerian soldiers are facing an unfortunate setback as they have been denied access to Bosso town to source items for their daily lives and basic provisions.

This new development occurred a day after a delegation from the West African regional bloc ECOWAS had left Niger without meeting the leader of the junta which seized power in a coup.

According to a delegation member on Friday, the team led by former Nigerian military ruler, Abdulsalami Abubakar could not spend the night in Niger as scheduled.

The ECOWAS delegation arrived in the capital Niamey on Thursday “but did not spend the night” as scheduled, nor meet with coup leader Abdourahamane Tiani or deposed President Mohamed Bazoum, the team member said.

The delegation was initially due to meet Tiani to present ECOWAS’s demands but met a brick wall before returning to Abuja.

Regional powerhouse Nigeria holds the rotating presidency of ECOWAS, which imposed sanctions and gave the military junta a week to restore Bazoum to power.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu however said the bloc would do its best to resolve the crisis amicably but ECOWAS said it could resort to military intervention as a last resort.

The 2023 FIFA World Cup is the first that will see three African nations qualify for the second round

The President of the Confederation of African Football, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has congratulated Nigeria, Morocco, and South Africa after they qualified for the Round of 16 of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Soccernet reports.

The 2023 World Cup has witnessed a lot of surprises. Some top countries like Germany, Brazil, Canada, and Italy were unexpectedly knocked out of the tournament in the first round, while other teams performed way beyond expectations.

This World Cup is also the first that has seen three African Nations qualify for the Round of 16. The Super Falcons advanced from Group B after finishing second with five points. It was also the first time that Nigeria did not lose a group-stage game.

Meanwhile, Morocco, who are debutants, also qualified from their group, which had Colombia, Korea, and Germany. They finished second in Group H after defeating Colombia in their final game.

Also, South Africa qualified for the second round for the first time as they finished second in Group G. They were the least-ranked country in the group, but they held their own and finished with four points.

Following their successes, Motsepe has praised the teams while noting that their performance is a signal of development in African football.

“CAF and the 54 African nations that are members of CAF congratulates the Women’s Teams of Nigeria, Morocco and South Africa for their historic and well-deserved qualification to the Round of 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023,” Mostepe said.

“The future of Women’s football on the African Continent is bright.

“The victories and successes of the Nigerian, Moroccan and South African women’s teams will contribute significantly to the development and growth of women’s football in Africa.

“CAF wishes the Nigerian, Moroccan and South African women’s football teams everything of the best for their upcoming matches.”

For the next round, Nigeria will play England, South Africa will lock horns with Netherlands, and Morocco will face Spain.

How Lamido Yuguda-led SEC ‘Withholds’ Over 12bn Shareholders’ Funds for Years

How Lamido Yuguda-led SEC ‘Withholds’ Over 12bn Shareholders’ Funds for Years

By Bolaji Gbadamosi

Aggrieved voices in the capital market have accused the Lamido Yuguda-led Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of illegally withholding over N12 billion in investor funds in its care for years.

By law, the SEC is the capital market regulatory authority whose core functions include ensuring prompt payment of shareholders funds and instilling investors confidence in the market.

In April, while speaking in Abuja on the outcome of the first quarter Capital Market Committee (CMC) meeting, Laimdo Yuguda, SEC’s director-general, had assured investors that the interest of shareholders would be protected during all transactions in the capital market.

He noted that protecting the interests of both majority and minority shareholders was the primary responsibility of the commission.

“Protection of investors is the central mandate of the commission and when the commission protects investors; we do not discriminate between minority and majority shareholders,” he had explained.

But recent revelations from shareholders and operators in the capital market about their ugly experiences are a stark contrast to the assurances.

The regulator under Yuguda’s watch is now being dragged for violating corporate governance, ethics and accountability codes, the same rules it should be upholding in the capital market.

Investigations by THECONSCIENCEng, a Nigerian online news platform, revealed that SEC has refused to pay shareholders of Dangote Flour Mills their accrued funds for over two years, citing countless administrative bottlenecks.

This is just as the affected shareholders had made several entreaties and appeals to the commission in order to get paid.

An aggrieved operator in the Nigerian capital market, who asked not to be named, described the difficulties experienced by shareholders of the former Dangote Flour Mills in the hand of the commission as unnecessary.

“In 2019, Dangote Flour Mills was acquired by Crown Flour Mills and under the terms of the acquisition, shareholders were to be paid the sum of N24 for every share of Dangote Flour Mills held,” the representative said.

“Under the terms of the scheme of arrangements of the acquisition the registrars, EDC Registrars Limited, was to pay the shareholders ab initio, and with a clause that all uncollected monies by shareholders should be transferred to the national investors protection funds by the registrars.

“The national investors protection funds was established by SEC in 2017 and they are to manage the monies.

“Since 2021, however, when the unclaimed money was transferred by EDC to SEC, shareholders who held shares of Dangote Flour Mills, have had excruciating difficulties in getting paid by SEC from the national investors protection funds.

“Many have written series of letters and made calls to registrar and SEC but all to no avail despite several assurances.”

He pleaded that hapless and innocent investors be paid all payments due to them.

“By its positioning, SEC should be the one offering succour and confidence to investors not the other way round,” he said.

“But where’s the protection from SEC when two years after collecting investors money, it has refused to release it? This is not a case of ponzi scheme victims paying for naivety, but a case of a regulator who should spearhead corporate governance and accountability.

“The SEC is wilfully denying people what is rightfully theirs. We have suffered in silence for two years and we hope to get succour very urgently.”

Multiple documents, including scheme of arrangement of contracts that backed up the aggrieved operators’ and shareholders’ claims, were sighted by TheConscience.

A section of one of the documents tagged ‘Plan for Untraceable Holders’, which binds all concerned parties together, states:

“Where scheme shareholders entitled to unclaimed monies remain untraceable twenty-four (24) months after the effective date, the registrar shall transfer all such unclaimed monies to the National Investors Protection Fund in accordance with the directive of the SEC.”

Few weeks ago, several media reports revealed that the commission has not audited its financial statements since 2014, a claim the commission later dismissed.

On July 26, TheConscience sent an email to SEC for comments on the matter, but it has not been responded to as of press time.

Super Falcons’ Coach Randy Waldrum Calls for FIFA Recognition Amidst Stellar Performance at 2023 Women’s World Cup”

Super Falcons’ Coach Randy Waldrum Calls for FIFA Recognition Amidst Stellar Performance at 2023 Women’s World Cup”

Randy Waldrum, the head coach of the Super Falcons of Nigeria, believes that his team is not adequately appreciated by FIFA despite their achievements. The Super Falcons, with a record 11 African Women’s titles and consistent appearances at the Women’s World Cup since 1991, are ranked 40th in the world, lower than other teams without such accomplishments.

During the ongoing 2023 Women’s World Cup, the Super Falcons have showcased their strength by defeating co-hosts Australia, drawing with reigning Olympics champions Canada, and also holding higher-ranked Republic of Ireland to a draw.

Waldrum pointed out that the team’s current ranking does not reflect their true abilities, stating, “I think we’ve shown that we’re a better team than 40th in the world.”

Despite uncertainties surrounding his position as head coach, Waldrum revealed that he has been in contact with several Nigerian footballers based in the US who are eager to represent the Super Falcons. His appointment in 2020 allowed more American-born Nigerian footballers like Michelle Alozie, Esther Okoronkwo, Ifeoma Onumonu, Yewande Balogun, Toni Payne, Jennifer Echegini, and Nicole Payne to join the team. Their presence has brought renewed cohesion to the squad, evident in their performance at the ongoing Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Moreover, Waldrum expressed excitement about connecting with young players from U-17 and U-20 teams, both in the US and England, who are interested in representing Nigeria at international levels, enhancing the team’s prospects further.

Despite the challenges, the Super Falcons continue to showcase their talent and determination as they face England in the round of 16 at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Commending President Tinubu’s Leadership and Police Professionalism for a Peaceful Protest

Commending President Tinubu’s Leadership and Police Professionalism for a Peaceful Protest

In a remarkable turn of events, today’s organized labor protest unfolded without any violence, bloodshed, tear gas, or injury – a noteworthy accomplishment in a nation that has often witnessed tumultuous demonstrations.

We cannot overlook the commendable leadership exhibited by President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector General of Police, representing the Nigerian Police. Their role in ensuring a peaceful protest deserves recognition, marking a significant stride towards fostering harmonious coexistence and upholding democratic values.

This instance stands as a rarity in Nigeria’s history, showcasing exceptional leadership and responsible governance.

“Anytime we want to kill terrorists, President would ask us to take permission from France but they were killing our soldiers-” Niger Republic coup leader

Leader of last weekend’s military coup in Niger Republic, Major General Abdurrahman chiani has further explained why they had to overthrow the administration of President Mohammed Bazoum, saying among other things that any time the soldiers discover hideout of terrorists and want to bomb or kill them, the President would order them to seek clearance from France, even as the terrorists kill their soldiers without mercy.

It would be recalled that Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Authority of Heads of State and Government under the leadership of Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, met in Abuja on Sunday and issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military to release and reinstate President Mohammed Bazoum as the legitimate Head of State and government of Niger.

Present at the meeting were Presidents Patrice Talon of Benin Republic, Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire, Adama Barrow of The Gambia, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau, Macky Sall of Senegal and Faure GnassingbĂ© of Togo while Presidents of Cape Verde, Liberia, Niger and Sierra Leone were represented.

While reacting, General Abdurrahman chiani rejected the call and warned ECOWAS against military intervention, saying, “We want to once more remind ECOWAS or any other adventurer of our firm determination to defend our homeland.”

He warned against any military intervention in a statement read on Niger national television.

Je said- “The objective of the ECOWAS meeting is to approve a plan of aggression against Niger through an imminent military intervention in Niamey in collaboration with other African countries that are non-members of ECOWAS, and certain Western countries,” Aljazeera quoted the military spokesperson, Col. Amadou Abdramane, to have said.

Making further explanation on the matter, the interm president said that- “Some people think that the coup operation is a game،
But whether we like it or not, there’s no going back.

“There are two cases, if France and its allies try to attack us to liberate Bazoum, we will have to liquidate it even before the Westerners reach us. Those who want to rally, let’s do it now, otherwise, having understood that we succeeded, if they come, we will not give up, either kill them or go to jail.

“I’ll tell you a secret: We often located terrorists, but when we asked to rush to kill them, President Bazoum told us to ask permission from the French forces first.
But our soldiers were falling on the fronts and France did not pay attention to this.

“We decided to do the same as Mali and Burkina Faso because one of the largest nests of terrorists is located here, and the “Ahmed Koufa” of the Malians is also located here near the Mali / Niger border.
We are ready to form a partnership with Russia and rely a lot on Mali to achieve this.
I’m already old and so are the other generals, so if we die it will be for a good reason.
The young man will take power, as in Burkina Faso and Mali.

“France will be weaker than all that. Mali was right about these imperialists. PMany presidents here in Niger have received billions to spoil us, I myself have received offers but we have not given up, so be sure of one thing that will make us like Mali. If I wanted, I would have led the command but if I let the former chief of staff salivo Modi lead it is for a very good reason and I have my reasons.

“I ask the people of Niger to follow the example of Malians and Burkinabes,” he stated.
