When Tinubu Appointed Wike, I Knew He Was Going To Deal Ruthlessly With South-South—Kenneth Okonkwo

When Tinubu Appointed Wike, I Knew He Was Going To Deal Ruthlessly With South-South—Kenneth Okonkwo

In an interview on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm, Kenneth Okonkwo shared sharp criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint Nyesom Wike as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, alleging a strategic intent to weaken the South South and diminish the PDP’s influence.

Okonkwo described the appointment as a calculated move to prevent potential opposition from Wike and to entrench PDP in a subservient role, claiming, “PDP is now servant of servant,” as party members holding governmental roles are ultimately beholden to the President.

Okonkwo speculated on Wike’s likely resistance to Tinubu’s policies had he not been appointed, pointing out that with this appointment, Wike’s leverage is muted as he now “serves the President.” This, Okonkwo contended, underscores a broader strategy of using ministerial positions as tools for political control rather than for advancing public welfare.

WHAT HE SAID

"On the day that the President appointed the FCT Minister, that was when I knew he was going to deal ruthlessly with the South South, both in appointment, both in everything. You could imagine what Wike would have been saying to this government, if he was not part of this Government. The reason they appointed him is to emasculate the PDP. PDP is now servant of servant because when you have a minister in government, you're a servant to the government. PDP is serving Wike and then the FCT minister is serving the president."

GTBank vs 4 Journalists: "Mechanical Fault Affected Our Evidence", Police Tell Judge

GTBank vs 4 Journalists: "Mechanical Fault Affected Our Evidence", Police Tell Judge

A Chief Superintendent of Police, Michael Abu, on Friday, told a Federal High Court in Lagos that mechanical fault was the reason some video clips needed as evidence against the defendants were missing in the case of four journalists accused of publishing false information about Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) Plc, parent company of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), and its Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Segun Agbaje.

Seven video clips played by the police on the computer in court were discovered to be duplicates of just two videos, depicting how only two of the four defendants wrote statements.

The prosecution witness, Abu, in the suit number FHC/L/774C/2024, told the court that the remaining video evidence must have been lost due to mechanical fault in the process of transferring files.

Meanwhile, from the two video footages, the two journalists were seen writing their statements without the presence of any legal representative, confirming the journalists claims.

The trial judge, Justice Ayokunle Faji had called for evidence, in a trial-within-trial,
to prove that the four defendants wrote statements voluntarily as claimed by police.

Earlier, the defendants had claimed to have been coerced to write statements without legal representatives despite telling the police that their lawyers were on their way.

The Judge had asked the police to provide evidence subsequently to determine the voluntariness of the confessional statements of the defendants.

The police had accused the journalists, Precious Eze, Olawale Rotimi, Rowland Olonishuwa and Seun Odunlami, of alleged conspiracy, cyberstalking and publishing false allegations through their media platforms against GTCO and Agbaje.

Abu told Justice Faji that he supervised the interrogation of the defendants while another member of his team, Yaqob Sule, interrogated them.

Consequently, Justice Faji later admitted the flash drive containing the videos and certificate in evidence and marked the flash drive as Exhibit A and the certificate as Exhibit B.

The Judge ordered the prosecution to make four copies of the flash drive available to the defence counsel and the court.

After listening to the arguments of the counsel, Justice Faji adjourned the case till November 13 and 14, 2024, for ruling on the bail applications and cross-examination of the witness.

It would be recalled that the House of Representatives recently launched an investigation into allegations of corruption, falsification of financial reports, and money laundering against Mr. Segun Agbaje, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO), and the bank itself. The investigation followed a petition submitted by Alhaji Yusuf Kabiru, President of the Arewa Consultative Youth Movement, and presented by Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi from Delta State to the lawmakers.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee also reportedly directed Guaranty Trust Holding Company to calculate and remit the Value Added Tax on commissions received from Remita transactions between 2015 and 2022 to the Federal Government.

The committee, chaired by Bamidele Salam, who represents Ede South/Ede North/Ejigbo/Egbedore Federal Constituency in Osun State, issued the directive during an ongoing investigation into alleged revenue leakages through the Remita platform. GTCO’s Executive Director, Mr. Ahmed Liman admitted that the bank had not remitted the VAT for eight years.

Additionally, the Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN), a non-governmental organization, stormed the National Assembly on October 3, seeking a legislative probe into alleged “corruption, fraud, and financial irregularities” in the bank.

In a statement signed by Amb. Comr. Adebayo Lion Ogorry, Director of Publicity and Mobilization, the group claimed that a private investigator’s report revealed that under the leadership of Segun Julius Agbaje, GTCO had engaged in unsolicited account openings, declaration of fictitious profits, round-tripping, money laundering, terrorism financing, and the use of customers’ and investors’ funds to pay penalties in the United Kingdom.

The journalists currently undergoing trial had brought these issues to public attention in their publications.

You Cannot Islamize Nigeria”: House of Representatives Erupts in Tense Debate Over Sharia Law Proposal

You Cannot Islamize Nigeria”: House of Representatives Erupts in Tense Debate Over Sharia Law Proposal

A fierce debate erupted in the Nigerian House of Representatives on Thursday as lawmakers clashed over a proposed bill to expand the influence of Sharia law in the nation, igniting a wave of heated exchanges and firm resistance from some members. The controversial bill, which seeks to implement aspects of Islamic governance, met with vocal opposition, with legislators stressing that Nigeria’s secular foundation must be upheld.

The debate began when the bill, introduced by a northern representative, proposed amendments to grant Sharia law broader jurisdiction within states that choose to implement it, sparking immediate reactions from members concerned about the bill’s potential to impose Islamic governance nationwide. Some members warned that such a move could endanger Nigeria’s unity, given its diversity in religious beliefs.

One of the opposing lawmakers passionately asserted, “You cannot Islamize Nigeria. Our nation’s constitution provides for freedom of religion, and we cannot set a precedent that undermines the country’s secular framework.” The lawmaker’s remarks were met with applause from like-minded representatives who argued that the proposal, if passed, would violate Nigeria’s commitment to equal representation for all religions.

Amid the heated exchanges, proponents of the bill argued that it simply aims to provide options for states with predominantly Muslim populations, emphasizing that it would not infringe upon other religious practices. Supporters called for an open-minded approach to the bill, noting that the flexibility to adapt governance based on regional preferences could promote harmony.

The intense back-and-forth underscores the sensitivity surrounding religious and governance structures in Nigeria. Lawmakers ultimately resolved to table the bill for further deliberation, directing it to relevant committees for an in-depth review of its constitutional implications and societal impact.

The divisive debate has since sparked widespread reactions on social media, with citizens voicing concerns about the nation’s trajectory and underscoring the importance of religious inclusivity in policymaking. Many urged the House to focus on issues that promote national unity, as Nigeria continues to navigate complex socio-religious dynamics.

We Were Forced To Write Under Duress," Journalists Reveal In GTBank Defamation Trial

"We Were Forced To Write Under Duress," Journalists Reveal In GTBank Defamation Trial

Four journalists standing trial before the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, in the alleged cyberstalking and defamation case filed by Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), holding company of GTBank, have narrated how they were coerced by the police to write statements without access to legal representation.

The defendants in suit number FHC/L/774C/2024 insisted that despite their requests to consult with their lawyers, the police forced them to write statements, threatening to deny them custody leave unless they complied.

It will be recalled that the four journalists—Precious Eze, Olawale Rotimi, Rowland Olonishuwa, and Seun Odunlami—were arrested in September 2024 by the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Lagos, following a petition by GTCO accusing them of defamation and cyberstalking.

In their argument, the defence legal team, including Barr. Olakunle Afolabi and Adebisi Adeniyi objected to the admittance of the statements as evidence, arguing that the statements were taken involuntarily and under coercion.

Earlier, during cross-examination, the IPO, ASP Yaqoub Sule, claimed that the suspects wrote their statements in a conducive environment. However, he admitted before the court that the suspects wrote the statements without their legal representatives present, stating that the defendants had informed the police that their lawyers were on their way.

In his ruling, Justice Ayokunle Faji adjourned the trial to Friday, October 25, and asked both parties to provide further evidence to validate their claims.

It should be noted that the House of Representatives recently launched an investigation into allegations of corruption, falsification of financial reports, and money laundering against Mr.

CPJ calls for release of four journalists detained over report on alleged fraud in GTB

CPJ calls for release of four journalists detained over report on alleged fraud in GTB

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an independent, non-profit organisation promoting press freedom worldwide, has condemned the continued detention of four journalists facing cybercrime allegations.

On September 20, police in Lagos arrested Olurotimi Olawale, National Monitor newspaper editor, and Precious Chukwunonso, publisher of a privately owned news platform.

On September 25, police arrested Rowland Olonishuwa, a reporter with the Herald newspaper in Kwara state; and Seun Odunlami, publisher of Newsjaunts in Ogun state.

On September 27, the four journalists were charged with violating sections 24(1)(b) and 27 of the Cybercrimes Act.

They were arraigned before a Lagos federal court for a report that accused Segun Agbaje, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), of involvement in alleged fraud worth N1 trillion (US$600 million).

The journalists had pleaded not guilty and were remanded at a Lagos correctional center, pending a bail hearing that was scheduled for October 4.

Although the police compelled the journalists to take down their articles, the house of representatives has announced an investigation into the matter.

The journalists are yet to be released on bail, while the charges against them have been amended to 10-counts.

The new charges include making “false and misleading allegations” on social media with intent to “extort” and “threaten” the management of GTB, as well as causing “harm” to the bank’s reputation.

Speaking on their continued detention, Angela Quintal, head of CPJ’s Africa programme, said: “Nigerian authorities should release journalists Olurotimi Olawale, Precious Eze Chukwunonso, Roland Olonishuwa, and Seun Odunlami and end the deepening criminalisation of the press.

“Nigerian authorities’ additional charges against these four journalists emphasizes their commitment to sending a chilling message to journalists across the country.”

Court Bars 27 Pro-Wike Lawmakers": After Rivers Crisis Says "There will be daring consequences

Court Bars 27 Pro-Wike Lawmakers": After Rivers Crisis Says "There will be daring consequences " -

A court in Rivers State has told 27 lawmakers who support Nyesom Wike that they can't act as members of the state's House of Assembly anymore. This happened on Friday, making the fight between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Wike even worse.

According to Daily post, Judge Charles Wali said these lawmakers can't meet or do any Assembly work. He also told Governor Fubara not to work with them or accept any bills they make.

This all started because these 27 lawmakers changed from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December. They did this because they were angry with Governor Fubara.

Victor Oko Jumbo, who says he's the new Speaker, asked the court to stop these 27 lawmakers. He and two others who support Fubara brought this case to court.

The judge said the 27 lawmakers can't use the Assembly building or meet anywhere else to do Assembly work. He also said their seats are now empty because they left their old party.

This fight has been going on for months. It's all about who's in charge in Rivers State. Wike used to be the governor, and he picked Fubara to take over. But now they're not friends anymore.

Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, who used to speak for the APC, said these 27 lawmakers aren't really Assembly members anymore. He said, "By the rules, when they changed parties, they lost their seats right away on 11 December 2023."

Eze also said that President Bola Tinubu tried to make peace. He told everyone to stop their court cases. Fubara listened and stopped his case, but the 27 lawmakers didn't.

"Governor Fubara didn't make a mistake by listening to President Tinubu," Eze said. He thinks it's strange that the court said Fubara was wrong when he was just doing what the President asked.

Eze is worried about what might happen next. He said, "There will be big problems if we don't stop Wike from controlling Rivers State."

He wants President Tinubu to step in and help. "The President needs to make sure one man doesn't cause trouble in Rivers State," Eze said.

Guaranty Trust Bank Involved In Financial Foul Play, Unsolicited Accounts Opening, Forex Manipulations, Others – Report Reveals

Guaranty Trust Bank Involved In Financial Foul Play, Unsolicited Accounts Opening, Forex Manipulations, Others  –  Report Reveals

It was also revealed in the PIR report that the Guaranty Trust bank had been punished severely for different violations at the international level.

An investigation report by a civic organisation has been released bordering on allegations of “unscrupulous, unethical and criminal activities” levelled against the Guaranty Trust Bank Limited, a subsidiary of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (also known as GTCO PIC).

The report was released by the Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN) and signed by its President, Edwin Omaga on Friday.

The Guaranty Trust Bank is led by Segun Julius Agbaje who is presently the Group Chief Executive Officer since August 2021.

A statement signed noted that the Private Investigation Report (PIR) is compiled pursuant to Section 24 (d) and (e) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) read together with our Objective No.2.

The statement noted that it was pertinent on the group to help ensure that corrupt practices are abolished in the country.

It was noted in the report that the Guaranty Trust Bank Limited was incorporated on 19 July, 1990 and licensed to engage in commercial banking and other allied services within Nigeria and elsewhere.

The report further stated that the Bank has Ordinary Shares of 25 Billion with 8 Active Directors but its only Shareholder and Person With Significant Control is Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, represented by Segun Julius Agbaje.

“In the United Kingdom, Segun Julius Agbaje started the Bank by registering same at the Companies House as Rainsouth Limited with Number 5969821 on 8 December, 2006. The said Rainsouth Limited went through various changes until it became Guaranty Trust Bank (UK) Limited on 17 March, 2008.”

The group further noted that as of the time of its report, there are over 10,000 customers exposed to grave danger without their knowledge, as accounts were allegedly opened in the Guaranty Trust Bank in their name without their consent.

“One of the corrupt practices recently linked to Guaranty Trust Bank Limited in Nigeria has to do with Unsolicited Accounts Opening. This is a situation where a customer did not approach the Bank or show any interest in maintaining an account with the Bank. Yet, the Bank goes ahead to source for the customer’s information such as telephone number, date of birth, Bank Verification Number (BVN) and other vital details to open account for the customer without his/her consent.”

“The aim of this practice is to increase the customer base of the Bank, thereby giving it high ranking in terms of size, capacity and profitability. We submit that Unsolicited Accounts Opening tantamount to breach of data privacy, identity theft and can expose the innocent account holders to lots of financial crimes. As at today, there are over 10,000 customers in the database of Guaranty Trust Bank Limited who are already exposed to grave danger without their knowledge.”

It was further noted in the report that some of the affected customers threatened to sue the Bank.

The Guaranty Trust Bank asides from this were alleged in the PIR of hurriedly putting together misleading financial statements and declaring false profits to mislead the public on its financial positions.

“We have equally uncovered that Guaranty Trust Bank Limited has been declaring profits that do not reflect its actual financial performance. For instance, GTCO PIc on 11″ September, 2024 released its Audited Consolidated and Separate Financial Statements for the period ended 30 June, 2024, to the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) and London Stock Exchange (LSE) wherein the whooping sum of #1.004 Trillion was declared as Profit Before Tax. This caused the Group to be reported all over media as “the first Nigerian financial institution to cross the N1trillion mark in profit.”

“It is our finding that these figures as contained in the Audited Statements are mere conjectures hurriedly put together by Segun Julius Agbaje and his team to deceive the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), customers/investors and the general public into believing that all is well with GTB.”

It was further stated that the bank could not justify its stated profit of N1trillion which it released to the public, with a suspicion that the profit could have been declared through roundtripping.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, there is no gainsaying the fact that Guaranty Trust Bank Limited has become notorious over the years for engaging in deceptive accounting practices to artificially inflate profit figures. For instance, no substantial pieces of evidence presented by Segun Julius Agbaje to support the assertion that GTCO PIc made over #1 Trillion in profit as at 30 June, 2024. Even at that, it is very possible that the figures were generated through roundtripping.”

“This is a process where funds are moved in and out of the Bank through different accounts or entities to create an illusion of legitimate transactions. The combination of this process and other unethical business practices within the Bank points towards the direction of systemic corruption, fraud and money laundering, which are opened for further investigation by the relevant agencies.”

“It is feared that such ugly situation if not properly checked could have the tendency of not only undermining customers/investors’ confidence in the Bank but pose significant risks to the stability of Nigerian financial sector.”

It was also revealed in the PIR report that the Guaranty Trust bank had been punished severely for different violations at the international level.

“Surprisingly, Segun Julius Agbaje did not tell Nigerians that the corporate image of Guaranty Trust Bank Limited has been terribly battered in many foreign countries where it is carrying on business. He lied by stating in the recent Audited Statements that GTCO PIc ensures compliance with disclosure requirements under the Disclosure and Transparency Rules of the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The truth is that Guaranty Trust Bank (UK) Limited was sanctioned by the same FCA to pay a financial penalty of £525,000 for breaches of Principle 3 (Management and Control) of the Authority’s Principles for Businesses between 19 May, 2008 and 19 July 2010.”

“In another development, the FCA imposed on Guaranty Trust Bank (UK) Limited a financial penalty of £10,959,700 pursuant to Section 206 of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. As usual, the Bank agreed to resolve this matter at an early stage and was given a 30% discount which reduced the fine to £7,671,800. The FCA in justifying this financial penalty, which was paid with customers/investors’ funds not later than 24″ January, 2023, stated that Guaranty Trust Bank (UK) Limited again failed to put in place policies and procedures to prevent and detect money laundering. FCA considered this repeated misconduct to be a direct result of the inability of the Senior Management within the Bank, over a prolonged period of time, to formulate and implement an effective plan capable of addressing the weaknesses identified in its AML and financial crime systems and controls.”

The statement further revealed that the Guaranty Trust Bank had been suspended in Ghana for various breaches of foreign exchange operations.

“our investigation took us to the Bank of Ghana where we discovered that the Foreign Exchange Trading Licence of Guaranty Trust Bank Ghana Limited (GTB) was suspended for a period of 1 (One) month with effect from 18 March 2024.”

“ The Press Release dated 4 March 2024 indicates that the said Licence was suspended as a result of various breaches of the Foreign Exchange Market Regulations, including fraudulent documentation in foreign exchange operations. By the Press Release, the Bank of Ghana cautioned GTB to put in place effective controls to ensure strict adherence to the extant Regulations and Guidelines.”

The statement wondered why the Guaranty Trust Bank allegedly carried out many infractions in Nigeria without any due sanctions to it.

“One begins to wonder the number of infractions committed by GTB in its originating country – Nigeria without due sanctions from Regulatory Bodies and Anti-Corruption Agencies. We are certain that it is not too late for the Regulatory Bodies and Anti-Corruption Agencies to act by rescuing the soul of GTB. The time to act is now!” the statement read.

The report also recommended that the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) should forthwith dissolve the Board and Management of Guaranty Trust Bank Limited so as to allow thorough investigations.

They also called for the suspension of Segun Julius Agbaje as Group CEO of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc and retrieve from him all files or documents relating to Guaranty Trust Bank Limited to avoid interference with further inquiry into the issues raised in the PIR.

It was also stated that if found guilty of Corporate Governance, CBN acting jointly with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Services (DSS) “should deal decisively with Segun Julius Agbaje and prosecute him like Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, who practically milked the defunct Oceanic Bank Plc dry before the Banks Consolidation era in Nigeria.”

Other recommendations made include that the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) as well as Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) “should urgently step into the affairs of Guaranty Trust Bank Limited with a view to safeguarding customers/investors’ funds and portfolios before the Bank fails completely”

It was also stated that the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, “House Committee on Banking as well as House Committee on Banking Regulations should jointly or individually convene a Public Hearing whereat Segun Julius Agbaje will be summoned to appear and defend the weighty allegations contained in our Private Investigation Report (PIR).”

The group also called on the UK National Crimes Agency (NCA), Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Financial Ombudsman Service, British Prime Minister, Governor Bank of England, US Department of Justice, US Securities and Exchange Commission, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), US Federal Reserve Board (FRB), British High Commissioner to Nigeria and Governor Bank of Ghana to shut down all operations of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) in their territories.

“By so doing, GTB will be prevented from turning the United Kingdom, United States of America and Ghana into a safe haven for money laundering, terrorism financing and other sundry economic crimes.” the statement released noted.

“That in addition to the above, UK National Crimes Agency (NCA), Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), US Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are requested to commence prosecution of Segun Julius Agbaje in line with appropriate laws for all the infractions he has used GTB to commit within the territories of both United Kingdom and USA.”it further read

It was also recommended that all the properties allegedly acquired by Segun Julius Agbaje using proceeds of crime in Nigeria, United Kingdom, USA and other parts of the world be confiscated and forfeited permanently to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

GTBank Cyber Stalking Case: Police Face Heat Over Procedural Lapse

GTBank Cyber Stalking Case: Police Face Heat Over Procedural Lapse

The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) of the Lagos Police Command is facing heat for arresting four online journalists without formal invitation on a petition from Guaranty Trust Bank, alleging cyber stalking and attempted extortion.

It would be recalled that the PSFU Lagos arrested four online journalists and arraigned them on a two-count charge before Justice Ayokunle Faji of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.

At the hearing of bail application on Friday, 4th of October , 2024, the prosecuting counsel, Barr. Enang told the court that the police, though concluded it's  investigation before the charge but agreed not to have invited them officially before the arrest and arraigning the suspects in court.

Earlier during the court proceedings, the defendants counsel, Barr Kunle Afolabi, argued that the police arrested the suspects without formal  invitation, even as he told the court that the suspects should not be denied bail in respect of section 158 and 165 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

Citing Section 24 of the Cyber Crime Prevention Act, 2024 as  amended, Barrister Afolabi maintained that there was no punishment for the allegations leveled against the suspects in the amended Act.

He, therefore, urged the court to grant the suspects bail pending the commencement of the trial.

He said, "My Lord, the prosecutor has not concluded investigation before rushing to court, then this court should not deny my clients bail. We emphasize that in respect of section 158, 165 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act which is sacrosanct and says they are entitled to bail.

"The charge is based on amendment because it has no penalty as stated in section 24 of the 2024 amended cyber Crime Prosecution Prevention Act.

"The law clearly states in section 24 (1a and b), as substituted by this law, the order amendment provides what the punishment are but this one clearly substitute that, but if the court will go back to the old law, I leave that to you. I urged your lordship to exercise discretion to grant the bail application."

In his counter argument, the prosecuting counsel opposed the bail application, citing Section 27 of the 2015 Cyber Crime Prevention Act.

He argued that, the amended 2024 Cyber Crime Act does not abrogate the 2015 law, saying the suspects committed an offence under section 27 of 2015 Cyber Crime Act.

The judge, Justice Ayokunle Faji, therefore, adjourned  the ruling on bail application until October 14 to review the amended 2024 Cyber Crime Act and determine whether it supersedes the 2015 Act.

This case raises concerns about the police's handling of cybercrime cases and the need for thorough investigations before making arrests.

Exposing the Truth: NGIJ Condemns PSFU's Narrative in the Four Journalists' Case

Exposing the Truth: NGIJ Condemns PSFU's Narrative in the Four Journalists' Case

In response to the recent press release by the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Lagos, signed by SP Eyitayo Johnson regarding the arrest and arraignment of four journalists for alleged cyberstalking and attempted extortion of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ) has said that it is constrained to set the record straight on several key points.

In a statement jointly signed by the President and the Vice President Administration and Strategic Communications, Malam Abdulrahman Aliagan and Oyewale Oyelola respectively, on Thursday, and made available to Journalists in Abuja, the Guild noted that without joining issues with the parties involved, the Police overstepped its boundaries under the law by issuing a statement that clearly pronounced the defendants guilty as charged.

The statement read in parts: “NGIJ view with dismay the desperate media war the PSFU seems to be waging against four journalists arrested by the unit at on the orders of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTBank).

“The Guild is shocked at the tone of the press release signed by SP Eyitayo Johnson and made available to the media on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024, when the Journalists have been arraigned in court and remanded at Ikoyi Prison until 4th of October, 2024.

“The tone of the press release is not only assertive and judgmental but smacks of a desperate attempt of giving a dog a bad name to hang it.

“Again, it seems PSFU wants to be a judge in its own case when they affirmed in the said press release that "having established contact with a staff member of the PR department of the bank, and despite being informed that the story in false; (sic) resorted to economic blackmail by demanding for financial compensation before the false publication could be pulled down."

“One would think that a reputable unit like the PSFU would be professional enough to allow the Court determined this case based on its merits (if any). This is because to the best of our knowledge, whether or not the arrested journalists demanded for financial compensation before pulling down the stories is a matter to be determined by the court.

"In setting the record straight: First and foremost, it is crucial to highlight that the four journalists in question were arraigned in court on Friday, 27th of September, 2024, before Hon. Justice Ayokunle Faji and are scheduled for trial from the 4th of October, 2024. This demonstrates that due legal process is already ongoing and the matter is being handled in a transparent and accountable manner by a court of law. Therefore, for PSFU to start issuing a press release and sending pictures of the Journalists to the media on the 2nd of October, even when their arraignment was widely reported by major newspapers on the 28th and 29th of September, 2024 has left a big question mark as to what the special interests of the Police in the matter is.

"Furthermore, it has come to light that the House of Representatives has received a petition regarding the subject matter in the case, with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen granting approval for a thorough probe of the allegations against the GTBank. This indicates that the issue has broader implications and is being taken seriously at a higher legislative level.

"GTBANK itself had before an investigative panel at the National Assembly in September confirmed that the bank did not remit (Value Added Tax (VAT) to the Federal Government for an extended period of 8 years. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Nigeria’s House of Representatives then ordered the GTBank to calculate the VAT owed on commissions earned through the Remita platform between 2015 and 2022 to the Federal Government.

"This fraudulent act was part of the content of the original report by the defendants, leading to their arrests. This revelation, without prejudice to the ongoing case in court, underscores the need for thorough investigation and scrutiny of the bank's practices, lending credibility to the four accused journalists' publications.

"Additionally, concerns have been raised about the fundamental human rights of the journalists as they were kept in custody by the Police for up to a week before they were charged to court. Moreso, the nature of the arrest of the Journalists in question in a 'Gestapo-style' without their arrests duly registered their with the local authorities in Ilorin and Abeokuta, remains a big question on the professionalism of the PSFU Police. This also raises questions about the fairness and legality of their detention and the nature of the arrest, especially considering the sensitive nature of press freedom globally.

"It is evident that the Police's actions in this case may indicate an attempt to suppress freedom of the press and stifle truthful reportage, particularly when considering the influence of powerful individuals and entity involved, like the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, Mr Segun Agbaje.

"Without any doubt, the role of the police should be to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of individuals, including journalists, without bias but in this case, adhering to these noble duties are doubtful.

"We therefore strongly condemn position taken by the Police in the allegations made against our four colleagues, in which they have taken a NOT GUILTY plea before the Federal High Court, Ikoyi.

"It's disturbing to see the police seemingly working to justify their actions, rather than upholding the principles of democracy and protecting the rights of journalists to report the truth by the obvious show of bias by the PSFU.

"The allegations appear to be a blatant attempt to continue to harass, intimidate, and silence our colleagues and stifle press freedom in efforts to protect the rich and the influential in the society.

"The NGIJ therefore stand in solidarity with rule of law and our colleagues as well as demands that their rights be respected, as we will continue to report the truth, without fear or favour, and hold those in power accountable for their actions in public interest.

"We therefore call on Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, the Chairman Police Service Commission, PSC, democratic institutions, the National Assembly, human rights organizations, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the international community to condemn the position of the PSFU as the prosecutor and the judge in the matter before the court", the statement concluded.

NGIJ leadership charges Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) and other key stakeholders in the sector, including the Dangote Refinery, to play their pivotal role in revitalizing the sector, that remains the backbone of the nation's economy.

"We call for a critical examination of the industry's challenges and the implementation of comprehensive reforms, to ensure that the benefits of the sector are equitably distributed among all Nigerians." Aliagan said.

"May the 64th Independence anniversary inspire a renewed hope and commitment to the ideals of democracy, social justice, and national unity that have defined the Nigerian spirit since its inception." The statement concludes.

Uncovering the Truth: House of Reps Set To Investigate GTCO's Corruption Allegations

Uncovering the Truth: House of Reps Set To Investigate GTCO's Corruption Allegations

By Abdulrahman Aliagan, Abuja

In a startling turn of events, the House of Representatives has given the green light to investigate corruption and money laundering allegations against Mr. Segun Agbaje, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO), and the bank itself.

The decision comes after a petition submitted by the President of Arewa Consultative Youth Movement, Alhaji Yusuf Kabiru and presented by Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, Delta state raised serious concerns regarding the financial practices under Agbaje's leadership.

The petition, presented to the Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, highlighted disturbing allegations, including the fictitious reporting of profits amounting to a staggering one trillion Naira, the use of family members as fronts for illicit activities, corruption, money laundering, and fraudulent practices within GTBank.

The petition called for a thorough investigation into these allegations to uphold justice and restore confidence among investors and citizens in the financial institutions. It emphasized the need for a forensic audit to uncover the truth behind the inflated profit figures and unethical business dealings allegedly orchestrated by Agbaje and his associates.

Moreover, the petition requested the immediate suspension of Mr. Segun Agbaje from his position as Group CEO of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc to prevent any potential interference with the inquiry. It also urged regulatory bodies such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) to safeguard depositors' funds and protect customers' investments during this period of uncertainty.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has referred the petition to the House Committee on the Public Petition for a thorough investigation. The gravity of the allegations and the call for a forensic audit underscore the atrocity of the situation at GTBank and the urgent need to address these alarming claims of corruption and financial misconduct.

As the investigation unfolds, the future of GTBank and the fate of its embattled GMD, Segun Agbaje, hang in the balance, awaiting the truth to be uncovered and justice to be served.

Power Play and Press Suppression

In a disturbing tale of power, influence, and alleged press suppression, four Nigerian journalists found themselves at the center of a media storm. Their crime, they published a story that questioned Guaranty Trust Bank's (GTBank) inflated profits, favoritism towards the bank's Group CEO’s sister, and his high-handed management style, which is the subject matter in the ongoing investigation by Nigeria's House of Representatives.

The journalists were arrested by Nigeria Police Force, allegedly on the orders of GTBank's CEO, Mr. Segun Agbaje, they were arraigned, Friday at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, and remanded at Ikoyi Correctional Center till October 4th on charges bothering on cyberstalking and spreading false information, with claims that their report insulted the CEO of GTCO Plc.

However, this incident raises grave concerns about press freedom and the rule of law. The Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists, NGIJ intervened, seeking an amicable settlement of the matter. Notable individuals attempted to mediate on the matter but to no avail.

The police's Gestapo-style arrest, without registering the arrests with local authorities, has been condemned by the Kwara and Ogun states councils of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), raising questions on breach of the journalists' fundamental human rights, particularly as they were kept in police custody for over 48-hour detention limit stipulated by Nigerian law.

The media's response is equally disturbing as some major newspapers initially reported the resolution by the House of Representatives to probe the allegations against GTCO, only to delete the report online, leaving behind faint links. This has raised questions about the independence of Nigeria's press and the influence of powerful individuals and organizations.

House of Reps Cautions on Incessant Arrest and Detention of Journalists

On the 11th of July, thecable.ng reports that the House of Representatives asked security agencies to stop the “incessant” arrest and detention of journalists. The lower legislative chamber passed the resolution during plenary, following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance titled: ‘Need to Curtail the Incessant and Unlawful Arrest and Detention of Journalists by Law Enforcement Agencies’.

According to the report, “The motion that was sponsored by Clement Jimbo, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika federal constituency of Akwa Ibom, noted that there has been a spike in the clampdown on journalists by security operatives in the last one year.

“In February, Kasarachi Aniagolu, a journalist with the Whistler Newspaper in Abuja, was arrested and detained for several hours. In March, Segun Olatunji, then editor of FirstNews, was abducted in Lagos.

“On May 1, Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), was detained by the police for 10 days after he was “abducted” by officers in Lagos.

“On May 14, Jamil Mabai, a freelance journalist, was detained by the Katsina Hisbah religious police after being invited to “interview their spokesperson”.

“On May 23, Madu Onuorah, publisher and editor-in-chief of Globalupfront Newspaper, was arrested and detained in Abuja.

“On May 28, the police detained Dayo Aiyetan, executive director of the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), and Nurudeen Akewushola, a reporter.

“Moving the motion, Jimbo said press freedom is a fundamental right enshrined in the constitution and must be obeyed.

“The lawmaker said journalists are being “unlawfully arrested, detained, and harassed” for carrying out their professional duties by law enforcement agencies “relying on the offense of cyber-stalking within the Cybercrimes Act, 2015”.

“Jimbo told his colleagues that the frequent arrest of journalists may limit investigative and independent journalism.

“The motion was unanimously adopted when it was put to a voice vote by Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house.

“Consequently, the house said protecting the rights of journalists is not only important for upholding democracy but also for safeguarding the principles of free speech and human rights. The Green Chamber asked the police and other law enforcement agencies to “cautiously and democratically rely on section 24 of the Cybercrime Act 2015 as amended and/or charge anyone, including journalists, to court if they have violated any law of the land instead of depriving them of their constitutional right”.

“The lower legislative chamber also resolved to conduct inquiries into recent cases of detention of journalists and engage in diplomatic efforts to pressure the government to respect press freedom. The house mandated the committees on national security to ensure compliance.” The Cable reports.

Similarly, on the 6th of August, the Committee to Protect Journalists called on Nigerian authorities to investigate reports that dozens of journalists were assaulted, harassed, and detained while covering cost-of-living protests, which began on August 1.
According to the report, “CPJ is investigating multiple incidents including one in the capital Abuja on August 3, where masked security forces fired bullets and teargas at several journalists wearing “Press” vests and their media-branded cars at the national stadium.

“Attacks on the press have been reported across the country since July 31, including by unidentified assailants who smashed the windows of a Channels Television-branded bus carrying 11 journalists and a car carrying two journalists in the northern city of Kano and others who assaulted journalists while they were reporting in southern Delta State, as well as police arrests of reporters in Maiduguri in northeastern Borno State.” It said.

Despite the House of Representative resolution cautioning security agents on the incessant arrest and detention of Journalists on the 20th and 25th of September another four Journalists, namely: Rowland Olonishua of The Herald Newspaper, Seun Odunlami of the Newsjaunts, Wale Olurotimi of The National Monitor and Precious Eze were arrested and remanded on the 27th of September in Ikoyi Correctional center till the 4th of October, 2024 by the Federal High Court, Ikoyi Lagos.

It is therefore instructive to note that, journalists play a crucial role in society by informing the public through accurate and unbiased reporting, holding those in power accountable through investigative journalism by promoting transparency and openness in government, institutions and also facilitating public debate and discourse on critical issues as well as protecting democracy and human rights through watchdog journalism.

Press suppression has far-reaching implications on any society, including the erosion of press freedom, increased authoritarianism and dictatorship, threats to security and stability as well as undermining human rights and democracy.

As the Committee on Public Petitions investigates the matter concerning GTCO and its CEO, one thing is clear: this case represents a chilling intersection of power, influence, and alleged press suppression.

The outcome will be a critical test of Nigeria's commitment to democratic values and the protection of journalists' rights. Only time will tell if justice will prevail.
