Yinka Alo, a 33-year-old entrepreneur from Lagos, shared his story, which reflects the darker side of this trend. After discovering that his wife had been having an affair with a fitness trainer, Alo’s personal life unraveled, revealing how some gym-goers are using fitness spaces for more than just exercise. His wife’s affair, which began before their wedding, was intertwined with their shared gym experiences. Alo explained that his wife not only had a sexual relationship with the trainer but also financially supported him, which added to the emotional betrayal he felt.
Alo’s story is not isolated. In major Nigerian cities like Lagos and Abuja, gyms are increasingly becoming places where people seek not only fitness but also romantic or sexual connections. Fitness influencers and trainers, often admired for their physiques, have become central figures in this changing gym dynamic. Their influence extends beyond fitness routines, as many of them showcase their physical appeal on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. This visibility has contributed to the rise in attraction to the fitness lifestyle, where physical health and allure intersect.
For many, the gym offers health benefits such as weight management, improved posture, and stress relief. However, for others, the gym has become an arena for building social connections, sometimes leading to brief, non-committal sexual encounters. In some fitness centers, trainers are said to take advantage of clients looking for quick flings, particularly those who may be in long-distance relationships or feeling disconnected from their partners.
In some cases, gym instructors are accused of playing matchmaker, setting up clients with potential hookup partners. Some gym-goers, particularly those seeking a casual connection, are said to see the gym as an ideal environment for these types of encounters. As more people seek out these informal and sometimes secretive connections, the gym is slowly transforming from a space of personal health into a venue for socializing, flirting, and hooking up.

One banker, Moses Oyeleke, for example, admitted that the gym he frequents on Lagos mainland is a place where he frequently encounters beautiful women. While participating in workout sessions, he and others socialize, exchange numbers, and form connections, with an underlying hint of attraction. For him, the gym has evolved into a space for both fitness and flirting.
In a similar vein, an affiliate marketer based in Ogun State revealed that his gym instructor has been involved with numerous women who frequent the gym in his area.
