NEWSLagos Police Arrest Sam Larry Over Mohbad’s Death

Controversial Lagos socialite, Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command.

AHEAD 2027: OLAWEPO-HASHIM CANVASSES NEW REFORMS ON INEC, ELECTION PETITION

PRESS RELEASE

AHEAD 2027:  OLAWEPO-HASHIM CANVASSES NEW REFORMS ON INEC, ELECTION PETITION

Tuesday, 26 September, 2023, Abuja, Nigeria:

A former Presidential Candidate and a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has canvassed a further reform of the Electoral Act that will address the recruitment of the leadership of  the nation's  electoral umpire, the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC and make it truly "independent" of  "external control and influence" before the 2027 election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was established by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to among other things organize elections into various political offices in the country.

The functions of INEC as contained in Section 15, Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended) and Section 2 of the Electoral Act 2010 (As Amended)

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja on Monday, Olawepo-Hashim recommended that the position of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and National Commissioners should be advertised and not appointed by the President.

He also stressed the fact that the Electoral Act should put the onus of proof of the conduct of credible election on INEC and not on the petitioner.

He revealed that during the military regimes, he and other activists fought  for a truly independent INEC, the positions should be advertised, while the National Judicial Service Commission (NJSC) should be the collation agency, independent of the Executive.

According to him, “In 1999, we won the election on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). But who were those that asked for an independent electoral commission? We were the ones . We were  not behaving like people who were sure they were going to get power, because we were believers in democracy.

“So, Nigerians need believers in democracy across parties to survive, not APC and PDP. This is beyond APC, PDP. If we don’t ‘sort out’ the electoral system right now, and not six months to election, or one year, the 2027 election is going to be war. Nobody will be going to court. So, we don’t want that now.

" Nigeria need statesmen not politicians. We don’t need politicians in the drivers  seats of the reform of our state institutions. We need statesmen to speak up.

Olawepo-Hashim maintained that the "issue of electoral reform is not the business for the opposition alone. It is the business for everyone who loves Nigeria because if we don’t reform the process,
and election can’t be delivered credibly, 2027 will be war."

He added: "We have to rescue the democratic process because it is becoming meaningless . Why are we having coup d’etat all over Africa? Because people did not see any content in what we call democracy."

According to Olawepo-Hashim "I know that people have their expectations in the judiciary but judges adjudicate based on law and evidence and the truth of the matter is that the Electoral Act has skewed the balance in favour of the winner of the election and the man who organized the election.”

Lagos Hospital Releases Statement Concerning The Death Of Mohbad
Perez Medcare Hospital, where singer Ilerioluwa Aloba aka MohBad was allegedly taken to, has released a statement concerning the singer’s d**th.

In the statement shared on its Instagram page on Monday night, the hospital stated that the singer was brought in d**d at the hospital.

The hospital also debunked rumours that the singer was admitted into the hospital.

The statement partly read, “The attention of the management of Perez Medcare Hospital has been drawn to the misleading and false information being circulated in some social media platforms that Mr. Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba (AKA Mobbed) d*ed in our medical facility.

“We consider it pertinent to put on record that at about 04:30pm on the 12th of September 2023, the lifeless body of Mr. Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba (AKA Mohbad) was brought to our medical facility and our medical team immediately sprang into action and after assessment, it was discovered that there was no sign of life, no central or peripheral pulse, no heartbeat, no recordable vital signs and his pupils were fixed and dilated.

FORMER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DEMANDS JUSTICE FOR MOHBAD, URGES POLICE TO DO THOROUGH INVESTIGATION

FORMER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DEMANDS JUSTICE FOR MOHBAD, URGES POLICE TO DO THOROUGH INVESTIGATION

Wednesday, 20th September, 2023, Abuja, Nigeria:

A former Presidential Candidate and a Global Oil Executive has enjoined the Police to do "justice to the memory and spirit of the Late rising Music Star,  Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba popularly known as Mohbad, by doing a thorough investigation of this matter, and ensuring that the culprits for the crime if any, do not escape the law."

In a statement from his media office in Abuja on Wednesday, Mr Gbenga
Olawepo-Hashim explained that the death of the young man has again "highlighted the terror that the grip of the underworld on our streets inflicts on the society."

According to him, "I deeply sympathize with those who truly love this fallen star, who tragically is becoming louder in death than in life. He has become a "Martyr" of a cause in a unique way."

He added that "the death of the rising music star, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba popularly known as Mohbad in very suspicious circumstances must be an occasion to free the society from the grip of the underworld."

According to him, "as a father who has a son in Arts and Music, two years older than Mohbad, I am worried and concerned about the grip of cult leaders, on some aspects of our musical lives and entertainment as well as the control of drug lords.

"The Mohbad saga has also further highlighted the dark side of entertainment financing in the absence of a well structured and disciplined support system for budding talents especially from poor homes."

He further stressed that "at the root of the exploitation of talented young people is the weapon of poverty manipulated by rich but rough and wicked. It is time to end this evil!"

He therefore appealed to those in charge of our Security in Nigeria "to allow and protect those who are pained by this sad occurence and who want to peacefully embark on processions and vigils.

"Organised violence by malevolent forces should not be an excuse to deny those who are peacefully seeking justice for Mohbad the right to do so!"

The Police authorities, he said,  "must ensure above all, that Mohbad gets justice in death!"

Call Obasanjo To Order For Disrespecting Monarchs Or We Will Strip Him Of All Chieftaincy Titles – Yoruba Council Tells President Tinubu

Call Obasanjo To Order For Disrespecting Monarchs Or We Will Strip Him Of All Chieftaincy Titles – Yoruba Council Tells President Tinubu

The Council demanded immediate apologies by Obasanjo within the next three days or face untold traditional and legal reprisal.

The Yoruba Council Worldwide has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of brazenly abusing South-West traditional rulers, saying that the former President has for a long time left the corridors of honour.

The Council in a statement signed by its President, Aare Oba Oladotun Hassan, and the Secretary General, Akowe Oodua Siyanbade Adekanmbi, said that Obasanjo dropped the biggest bombshell taboo in the history of Yoruba Land and most disturbing sacrilege in Iseyin, Oyo State when he addressed arrays of first class Royal Fathers and other leading Obas like toddlers or a village headmaster or an Army General talking profusely at his foot soldiers in a most depressing, disparaging and disrespectful manner.

The Council demanded immediate apologies by Obasanjo within the next three days or face untold traditional and legal reprisal consequences, saying that the consequences were far more than filing action at a court of competent jurisdiction for defamation and scandalous libel.

The statement read, “The recent weeks have witnessed a barrage of monumental embarrassments, ridicules and brazen abuse of traditional royal Obas and most shocking to grasp with was this well-intended orchestrated embarrassments by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who dropped the biggest bombshell taboo in the history of Yoruba Land, perhaps most disturbing sacrilege in Iseyin, Oyo State when he addressed arrays of first class Royal Fathers and other leading Obas like toddlers or a village headmaster or Army General talking profusely at his foot soldiers in a most depressing, disparaging and disrespectful manner.

“Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has since left the corridors of honour, while we reiterate as the leading vanguard voice for all Yoruba indigenous people globally, we have eternal duty to preserve the aesthetic distinct Omoluabi ethos, Royal stools and ancestral customs and traditions of the Yoruba Obaship, precipitating our demand for immediate apologies by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo within the next three days or face untold traditional and legal reprisal consequences, not limited to filing action at a court of competent jurisdiction for defamation and scandalous libel, while we shall call for stripping him off of all chieftaincy titles conferred on him by any Yoruba monarchs.

“Furthermore, we shall mobilize all market women, youths and leaders of thoughts against the Baba Obasanjo for desecrating the Yoruba ancestral cultural heritage, norms, tradition and values.

“On this note we wish to set the records straight that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is NO longer the President of Nigeria, and he should stop parading himself deceitfully and impersonating or creating a scenario to command such ill motivated authority.

“We have seen Omoluabi President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accord high level respect during his recent visits to the Awujale of Ijebu Land Oba Sikiru Adetona and Alake’s Palace, as well as Governors like Hon. Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji of Ekiti State prostrated before Kings and Elders, wherein at all times this standard practice should be emulated and not the disrespectful manner done by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the Former President of Nigeria.

“We therefore call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call Obasanjo to order, and as part of way forward towards preserving and protecting the Royal Institutions is to establish the National Council of Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs wherein other duties of grassroots security and community policing, national economic planning and strategic growth, granting of 10% special allocation funds from the Federation Account and other roles as expected of Traditional leaders will be guaranteed by the Federal Government accordingly.

NLC reveals that Tinubu gave each legislator more than N100 million in a nation when Nigerians are suffering

NLC reveals that Tinubu gave each legislator more than N100 million in a nation when Nigerians are suffering.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has argued that the so-called palliatives provided by the government of President Bola Tinubu are embarrassing to Nigerians because each legislator received N100 million while hundreds of millions of people in each local government struggle to get by on a few bags of rice.

On Tuesday, the NLC announced that if their demands were not met by the Federal Government by the end of a 21-day deadline that will soon expire, they would go on an indefinite strike.

The workers union, according to Sahara Reporters, asserted that the strike was essential since the federal government had not provided assistance for the issues that Nigerians were experiencing as a result of the withdrawal of fuel subsidies.

According to Mr. Christopher Onyeka, the National Assistant General Secretary of the NLC, the FG was irresponsible to give a bag of food to twelve individuals while purportedly giving each member of the National Assembly N100 million in palliative care. The Assistant General Secretary asserted that the palliative being offered was insufficient and insulting to Nigerians.

Can you perceive the insult in the fact that a ward would share a sack of rice and the administration refers to that as a palliative, he bemoaned? The government handed lawmakers N70 billion, and each legislator received more than N100 million in a nation when Nigerians are suffering. This is an insult to Nigerians.

“The FG is purchasing homes and automobiles worth over N100 million for each individual, and Nigerians are remaining silent as if this is a routine occurrence. Nigerians are urged by NLC to work together since they cannot accomplish this on their own.

People should show up when the NLC calls for action because it would take a group effort to get the government to heed Nigerians’ wishes and interests

Group condemns call for military takeover in Nigeria by retired generals

Group condemns call for military takeover in Nigeria by retired generals

….Calls for sanctity of the judiciary

Organization for Community Civic Engagement of Nigeria (OCCEN) has condemned the action of a group of retired military generals threatening the elected government of president Tinubu with coup scare.

The Executive Director, OCCEN – Nigeria,
Abdulrazaq Alkali stressed this in a statement on Saturday.

Alkali noted that the ruling by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) led by 5-member team of justices from the appeal court and high courts upholding the electoral victory of the President Bola Ahmad Tinubu will go a long way in upholding the nation’s
democracy and strengthening the efforts and independence of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

He however condemned the action of some supporters of the opposition who are blackmailing and threatening the Judges.

He particularly condemned moves by a crop of retired military generals who are calling for military takeover in Nigeria.

He said,”Apart from these treacherous plans against the judiciary, some of the actors from the opposition have (been) secretly promoting and calling for national protest, with the aim of creating instability and worsening the socio-economic conditions of Nigerians. They are hoping to exploit the difficult economic challenges bedevilling Nigeria to rile up citizens into violent protest against the elected government.

“It has also emerged that some of these actors are planning to use the crisis and instability to promote military intervention, motivated by the recent military coups that is sweeping some of our neighbouring countries. This can be seen from quite a number of their supporters who are recorded on social media calling for crisis and military takeover in Nigeria.

“It is disheartening to see that a group of retired military generals threatening the elected government of president Tinubu with coup scare by reference to happenings in other African countries.

“It is vitally important for us as citizens not to allow politicians and criminals to exploit our vulnerabilities and current economic difficulties to lead us into unimaginable crisis that will bring this country on it knees. At the end of the day, it is us the citizens that will bear the consequences of those crisis.”

Alkali pointed out that handling of the legal process and the verdict delivery displayed high level of legal sagacity, professionalism, and responsibility on the part of the tribunal judges despite the media and social media attacks lunch against their personalities and their families.

According to him, the constitution has clearly laid down procedures to follow in challenging election at tribunals up to supreme courts.

“The action of some supporters from the opposition parties in blackmailing and threatening our Judges should highly condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians. One would wonder whether these actors and their supporters are interested in having a just system that works for all or that they are only interested in access to power by hook or crook.

“It is unfortunate that these actors who have also failed to learn from their previous mistakes of using economic, ethnic and religious blackmail to ascend to power have now resorted to blackmailing our justice system.

“It is therefore critical for well-meaning Nigerians and lawyers to speak up and upheld the sanctity of our judiciary. We should be careful of the possible repercussions that will befall us as a nation if we allow such elements to rubbish and destroy the image and confidence of our judiciary through their dubiously crafted lies and blackmail,” he said.

He said politicians should understand in clear terms that the only option for them to seek redress is through the judicial system as laid down by our constitution.

He pointed out that the ruling delivered by the PEPT is not a final judicial judgement regarding presidential election, adding that the petitioners have a right to appeal the ruling at the Supreme Court.

“It is important for Nigerians to understand that the current economic situation should not be a reason to allow politicians exploit our anger. Every well-meaning Nigerian knows that difficult decisions and changes need to be implemented about the existing economic policies particularly regarding fuel subsidies and multiple foreign exchange rates.

“These schemes are bedevilled by corruption with only a few individuals enriching themselves from the nation’s wealth. It is crucial that Nigerians give the current government a chance and the needed time to implement the palliative programs and salary adjustments necessary to cushion the economic difficulties we are facing.

“Also, the plans by the government to direct savings from these inefficient schemes into developmental project should be highly welcome development, even if Nigerians don’t see the benefit in the short term, the medium- and long-term economic benefits will be enormous.

“This is not in any way discouraging Nigerians from speaking up, Nigerians have every right to engage in constructive criticism of government decisions and processes, but for Nigerians to be careful with treacherous and selfish politicians who are power hungry and are willing to go to any extent just to gain power,” Alkali stressed.

2023 AFCON qualifier: ‘I want to show my worth to fans’ – new Super Eagles invitee

2023 AFCON qualifier: ‘I want to show my worth to fans’ – new Super Eagles invitee

Jordan Torunarigha is the son of former Nigerian International Ojokojo Torunarigha and he also has a brother named Junior Torunarigha who is also a footballer.

Newly invited Super Eagles defender, Jordan Torunarigha has revealed that he is ready to prove his worth if given the chance to play against Sao Tome and Principe in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo on Sunday, Soccenet.ng reports.

Having represented Germany at various youth levels, Torunarigha recently switched his nationality to represent the Nigeria national team.

The 26-year-old has now been called up for the first time alongside his Belgian club Gent teammate Gift Orban in head coach Jose Peseiro’s squad for the West African country final 2023 AFCON qualifying fixture against Sao and Principe on Sunday.

With the country’s ticket to the continental showpiece in Ivory Coast next year already assured after a hard-fought 3-2 win over Sierra Leone in the last match, the 63-year-old Peseiro will be aiming to use the game as an opportunity for the new invitees to prove their worth in the team, and also to start bringing together his squad to represent Nigeria in Africa Cup of Nations.

However, Torunarigha has revealed that his first ambition is to show his worth to fans by helping the Super Eagles claim victory on Sunday.

The 26-year-old was among the 23 players who opened camp on Tuesday for the dead rubber clash against the Falcons and Parrott which is set to take place at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

This is my first call-up and I hope I will be given time to show the fans, who have been criticizing me for denying Nigeria all through, what I am made of. I am a young guy and I want to show Nigerians what I can offer, He told NFF TV

He also revealed that the team vice-captain William Troost-Ekong and Cardiff City defender Jamilu Collins have been helping him to settle into the team, while also expressing his excitement to train alongside Serie A stars like Victor Osimhen and AC Milan new boy Samuel Chukwueze.

Captain Troost-Ekong and Collins have really helped me to find my spot in Eagles

It’s nice to meet the players and I think all of them are nice people. It’s also nice to train with big players like Osihmen and Chukwueze, Torunarigha said

The Super Eagles will be aiming to command another big win over the 186th FIFA-Ranked Central African country after the first leg finished a 10-0 victory for Peseiro’s side in Agadir, Morocco over a year ago.

Tribunal: I don’t know who was giving PDP hope - Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that he didn’t know who was giving the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) hope over their case at the tribunal.

Nyesom Wike stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

On Monday the Presidential Election Petitions Court upheld the election of Bola Tinubu.

But during the interview, Wike, who commended the judges, said president Tinubu won the election squarely.

Wike said, “During the tribunal sitting there was a matter over Shettima’s case at the supreme court. I don’t know who is behind it and giving them all kind of hope. In that matter as a member of the board of trustees I put out a text that we should all pray tomorrow is our day.

“I don’t know who is somewhere giving them all this kind of hope. I don’t know whether the pastors, the imams, I don’t know who is tipping who, who is not telling them the truth.

“If you don’t listen to that judgment you understand the kind you hear on social media. They didn’t attend the tribunal sitting for one day but they are putting out all that kind things. We have resorted to intimidating judges to get judgments in our favour.

“I watched a video where a pastor placed pictures of the judges in court and asked the congregation to pray against them.”

Meet the five judges who will be delivering judgment at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal tomorrow

Meet the five judges who will be delivering judgment at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal tomorrow
The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal will on Wednesday, September 6, give its verdict on the suits filed by five political parties; Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), Action Peoples Party (APP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Action Alliance (AA), challenging the emergence of Bola Tinubu as winner of the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

The Nation reports that the sitting of the five-man panel of justices is headed by the presiding justice, Justice Haruna Tsammani. On the day of the final judgement, the five jurists will deliberate and possibly vote to take a final decision, in case there are disagreements on issues thrown up at trial. The decision is, however, not final, as a displeased party can still appeal to the Supreme Court.

The judges presiding over the tribunal are:

2. Justice Stephen Adah – Court of Appeal (Asaba division)

3. Justice Monsurat Bolaji-Yusuf – Court of Appeal (Asaba Division)

President Muhammadu Buhari would later grant a widely condemned pardon to Dariye alongside a former governor of Taraba, Jolly Nyame, after their conviction and jailing had been affirmed by the Supreme Court.

The Heavens Won’t Fall, Tribunal Judgement Is Not Final – Falana

NEWS6th Of September: The Heavens Won’t Fall, Tribunal Judgement Is Not Final – Falana

6th Of September: The Heavens Won't Fall, Tribunal Judgement Is Not Final - Falana
Popular human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has expressed concern about the attention the expected verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal is generating from Nigerians.

The lawyer stated that no election petition has attracted such a level of blackmail and intimidation of the judiciary since the colonial days as the 2023 tribunal.

Falana however pointed out that the verdict of the tribunal is not final and all stakeholders need to remember that the Supreme Court can still overturn whatever be the presidential tribunal’s ruling.

Naija News reports the lawyer made the submission on Monday during an interview appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

In his words, “We have been having election petitions since the colonial era, but none has attracted such level of blackmail and intimidation of the judiciary.

“I am worried that people give the impression that everything ends with the judgement of the Court of Appeal, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. Any party that loses on Wednesday still has the opportunity to appeal to the Supreme Court. So, what is the basis for the cheap blackmail that is going on?”

The senior lawyer noted that regardless of the outcome of Wednesday’s tribunal ruling, the heavens won’t fall and the judges must not be intimidated.

“As they say, even if the heavens will fall and the heavens won’t fall anyway, the judges must not be intimidated, they must give their decision regardless of blackmail or intimidations convinced that they can justify their judgment.

“That is what is required of them, to examine the evidence, apply the law and deliver a decision. One way or the other, some will lose, some will win; but those who lose in the case and are aggrieved will have another opportunity to approach the Supreme Court and demonstrate how the Court of Appeal has erred,” Falana submitted.

It would be recalled that the Court of Appeal on Monday confirmed that it will deliver judgement on the presidential election petitions on Wednesday, 6th September, 2023.

Alhaji Mohammed: Owner Of Demolished Abuja Duplex Vows To Commit FCT Minister, Wike To Prison

Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Kamba, an Abuja-based developer, has declared his intent to take legal action against Barr Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, and file a lawsuit against the Director of the Development Control for what he perceives as an overreach of their authority, as reported by TrackNews

To provide context, the Federal Capital Development Authority had demolished a duplex under construction located at Plot 226, Cotonou Street, Wuse Zone 6. This property belonged to Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Kamba. The authorities claimed that the building was constructed on land owned by someone else without a valid title.

However, Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Kamba’s lawyer, Okechukwu C. Uju-Azorji, issued a press statement in which the developer expressed his intention to initiate contempt proceedings against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. This was due to what he perceived as an abuse of the processes of the FCT High Court.

According to Kamba’s legal team, they assert that the plot in question rightfully belonged to their client’s predecessor in title. This previous owner had constructed a guest house known as the “Boys’ Quarters” on the plot and had been collecting rent from it for over 25 years. In 2019, they sold the property and transferred possession to Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Kamba.

Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Kamba is determined to take legal action against the FCT Minister and the Director of the Development Control, claiming that the demolition of his property was unjustified and that he possesses legitimate ownership rights to the plot in question, which he obtained from the previous owner.

Coup fears rise as ex-generals send strong message to Tinubu and governors

Coup fears rise as ex-generals send strong message to Tinubu and governors

Coup fears rise as ex-generals send strong message to Tinubu and governors

Concerns of a possible coup in Nigeria have been raised by retired military generals, who have warned President Bola Tinubu and elected governors against violating the constitution.

This warning comes in light of recent coup incidents in Niger Republic and Gabon.

The former top military officers emphasized that a disregard for the constitution and lack of good governance could potentially lead to a military takeover in Nigeria.

General Alexander Ogomudia, a former chief of defence staff, stated that the occurrence of coups reflects the way elected leaders govern their countries.

He emphasized that if leaders fulfill their campaign promises and respect the constitution, there would be no moral justification for a coup.

Brig.-Gen. Phillip Ashim also highlighted that the key to preventing coups in Africa is ensuring good governance and the well-being of the people.
