Atiku US trip delays PDP peace moves, ex-VP plans meeting with Wike!

The reconciliation efforts in the Peoples Democratic Party may suffer a delay as the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, whose emergence and choice of running mate has caused disagreements among some party chieftains, has travelled to the United States.

Sunday PUNCH also learnt that on his return, Atiku planned to meet with Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who is said to be aggrieved by the outcome of the party’s presidential primary and his failure to emerge as the running mate.

Some party chieftains, including Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State and former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, have in the last few days expressed displeasure over the state of affairs in the party. While Ortom criticised the way Wike was treated in the run-up to the emergence of a running mate, Fayose, who participated in the party’s presidential primary, said it was southern presidency or nothing.

A former governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, had also expressed reservations over the way Atiku disregarded the recommendations of the committee set up to choose a running mate for him and went ahead to pick Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.

Some sources in the party told Sunday PUNCH that the party leadership was concerned about the developments, but that Atiku’s presence was also necessary for most of the issues to be resolved.

Multiple sources said the former vice-president was advised to take out time to relax, having been consulting since he emerged as the party’s candidate in the February 25, 2023 election.

One of his allies, who first spoke with one of our correspondents on Saturday morning, said the purpose of the trip was for him to rest and strategise on how to placate those aggrieved over Okowa’s emergence.

He was asked by one of our correspondents how the PDP candidate was handling the conflict in the party and if the trip of the former vice-president would not slow down the peace process aimed at placating the angry members of the party.

The source said, “Yes, you are correct. Atiku is in the US. He is expected to brainstorm with some of his allies and find a way of settling the problems in the party.

“Thankfully, there is still ample time to discuss, harmonise and even settle differences. So, nobody should think these politicians don’t know what they are doing.”

Director, Support Group and Events Technical Committee, Atiku Abubakar for President 2023, Oladimeji Fabiyi, also confirmed Atiku’s trip to the United States.

He said the cacophony of voices in the party was not different from any other political party. He said the developments in the PDP, like any other big political party, was normal especially during the election cycle.

He added, “As you can see, even the ruling All Progressives Congress is going through some challenges too. The difference is that PDP is a party of the people owned by the people unlike the APC that is almost a one-man party.

“I make bold to say that there is no crisis in the PDP. Yes, there are dissenting voices which do not signal a crisis that can shake the foundation of the party. As a result, the emergence of Governor Okowa is a welcome development among all the organs of the party. You will recall that the candidate of our party, Atiku Abubakar, made very wide consultations before arriving at the choice of his running mate.

“The leadership of the party and the candidate will reach out to those voices that do not seem comfortable one way or the other because we know that PDP has to be united going into the upcoming election.”

Asked when Atiku would return to the country, he said, “as soon as possible,” adding that “those of us close to him encouraged him to take a break after the rigorous campaigns before the presidential primary. He will return before you know it.”

Fabiyi added, “Atiku will reach out to all critical stakeholders of the party, not just those with complaints. Atiku understands the fact that the party must first be united before we can go into election and no stone will be left unturned in achieving that. The key word here is engagement which Atiku is seriously doing in order to bring everyone together.

“I want to maintain that there is no tension in the party, it is just family differences which are already being attended to by the leadership of the party and the candidate. Even in states where we have pockets of differences they are being resolved by reconciliation committees across board. Like I said, every concerned party man and woman are being consulted.”

In a tweet on Saturday night, Atiku called for concerted efforts to move the country forward. He wrote, “Getting this country back on track will require all hands on deck. And I am excited to go on this journey with my vice-presidential candidate, H.E Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa. Let’s come together as ONE (sic) towards a brighter future for all and for Nigeria.”

…may meet Wike

One of the aides of the former vice-president, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak on the issue, noted that Atiku would meet Wike once he returned to the country.

Wike on Saturday arrived in the country from Turkey, where he went for vacation.

The source said, “Many people are aware that the Rivers State governor is unhappy that he lost the primary and was not chosen as the running mate, despite the fact that he was recommended by the committee set up for that, but no issue is beyond reconciliation.

“Atiku will meet with Wike when he returns. Governor Wike is a key member of our party and we need him to be on our side, not just for the election but also because that is the right thing to do. The governor is a good party man and is not the type to jump around and once Atiku meets him, we are confident the issues would be resolved and they would be able to work together for the overall interest of the party.

BoT, others intervening

Meanwhile, the Board of Trustees of the party and other party caucuses are intervening to bring lasting peace to the party.

A BoT member who is also a former National Secretary of the party, Prof Wale Oladipo, told Sunday PUNCH that though the interventions were not official, the crisis would not affect the party’s chances in the 2023 general elections.

He said, “Though there is no official meeting on the issue, I can attest to the fact that there are interventions here and there on it. Members of the board are intervening, other caucuses are also intervening. We will resolve it.

“The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, is a valuable member of our party and our presidential candidate is also our valuable member. We will resolve it. There is nothing to worry about. It is politics.”

Running mate battle

Meanwhile, the politics of picking a running mate has always been a contentious one, going by investigations by Sunday PUNCH.

A top source in the party recalled how former President Olusegun Obasanjo refused to pick the late Abubakar Rimi, who was said to be the choice of the northern oligarchy. Instead, Obasanjo picked Atiku, who was then the governor-elect of Adamawa State.

“Obasanjo believed that Rimi was too popular and could overshadow his presidency. Hence, he went for Atiku,” the source said.

It was also based on the same reason that the late Umaru Yar’Adua dropped the likes of a former Governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili, and a former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, for the then Governor of Bayelsa State, Goodluck Jonathan.

When Yar’Adua died, it was also gathered that a former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, was suggested to Jonathan as his deputy after he was sworn in as the President, but to the surprise of many, Jonathan went for Namadi Sambo, who was the then governor of Kaduna State.

Wike, Amaechi return

Wike returned to Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Saturday after a short trip to Turkey.

Wike, in company with the Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, landed at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Saturday afternoon. He was received by PDP stakeholders led by the state party chairman, Desmond Akawor, and a retinue of other leaders. He was driven to his private residence in Port Harcourt.

Meanwhile, the governor’s arrival coincided with that of the former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, who landed earlier on Saturday.

Amaechi while addressing All Progressives Congress faithful and party supporters said he was on ground to give steam to the party ahead of the general elections.

There are fears that there may be escalated tension in the state ahead between the supporters of the two politicians, who used to be friends but are now at loggerheads. Wike had recently moved to prosecute Amaechi and others over alleged sale of state assets, among others.

…seeks Tinubu’s victory

Amaechi has also urged thousands of his supporters to work for the party and ensure that its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, wins the 2023 election.

Speaking at the APC secretariat in Port Harcourt, he said he would be on ground to ensure the party’s victory in the state, while urging them to shun whatever grievances they had.

He added, “Please, the contest for the presidency; we should know that we must go and vote for our party, no matter how angry you are. They have chosen, let’s go and vote for our party. For the stories you hear about the people who are gossiping, how they are having meetings in France, let this be your own France.”

“Those days of meeting and writing results have all gone. We must praise INEC and the National Assembly for reducing the level of rigging.”

Reacting to the allegations of alleged sale of Rivers State Government assets running into several billions of naira, Amaechi said, “I hope the governor has good lawyers?”

He added, “The Supreme Court said in its judgement, when they said he (Wike) has powers to set up a panel and that the work of the panel is to gather information and after they have finished gathering information, they would pass the information to the ICPC, the police or the EFCC.

“The police have not invited me, the ICPC has not invited me; the EFCC has not invited me. Secondly, there is what is called fair hearing. It is at that point where they invite me that they will hear my own side of the story. They have not heard my own side of the story; you go to court, to do what? Something must be giving him (Wike) confidence.”

Speaking earlier, the state APC governorship candidate, Tonye Cole, assured party supporters that the party would be on the ballot come the governorship election.

Adeboye Rains Curses On Terrorists, Kidnappers, Sponsors, NSCEA Rains Plagues

Adeboye Rains Curses On Terrorists, Kidnappers, Sponsors, NSCEA Rains Plagues

“From now on it is going to be fire for fire” -Papa Enoch Adeboye

"All they have done to others shall be done to them and all their generation unborn by fire" -NSCEA

In a news report by Shojobi Abisola on July 2, 2022 in Independent, "The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pa. Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has rained curses on kidnappers, terrorists and their sponsors.

Churches in Nigeria have suffered more deadly attacks and excruciating deaths recently. An attack on a church in Owo, Ondo State, was one of the notable attacks in the month of June.

Pa. Enoch Adeboye, "The cleric who spoke during his sermon at the ongoing July Holy Communion Service said criminal groups terrorising churches and Nigeria will know no peace.

“As the Lord lives, every evil plot against the church of the Lord will be consumed by fire in the name of Jesus. From now on every kidnapper, terrorists including their sponsors will never experience rest again.

“The blood running in their vein will turn to fire, the air they breathe will turn to fire, the ground they step will turn to fire, the bed they sleep upon will turn to fire, when they wake up, they will be waking in fire, when they sleep, they will be dreaming fire.

“As long as Jesus lives, as long as the name of God I serve is the consuming fire, every evil plot against the church of God, the fire of God will consume them,” he prayed.

The report at NSCEA states that following the aggressive prayers from the gentleman and humane man of God, Bishop Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, the Secretary, Elder’s Council Nigerian Supreme Council for Ecclesiastical Affairs (NSCEA) confirmed that special scriptural readings and special deliverance prayers were rolled out to all Christians to pray along by NSCEA.

SPECIFIC SPECIAL PRAYERS
The TEN (10) plagues in the book of Exodus are to be prayed as Moses prayed when he asked Pharaoh to let the Israelites be free and leave Egypt and Pharaoh refused. As Papa Enoch Adeboye "The blood running in their vein will turn to fire" and their lives will never remained the same again.

NSCEA thus pray down the wrath of God that was upon Pharaoh and his people from now onwards upon every kidnapper, terrorists including their sponsors. The blood running in their vein will turn to fire. They will never experience rest again.

Egypt TEN (10) plagues in the book of Exodus shall daily follow them:
1. Plague of Blood

All they have done to others shall be done to them seventy times all and their generation unborn as the Lord lives in Jesus Christ Yeshua mighty name by the fire of the Holy Ghost.

Furthermore, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has in another report said, "Defend yourselves, from now on it is fire for fire, Adeboye tells Christians." It is now in the hands of the Children of God to defend themselves amidst rising insecurity in Nigeria. The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God stated this during the church’s July 2022 Holy Ghost Service.

The highly respected cleric stated that there is nowhere in the bible where God said a child of God can not defend himself. He said that when God is silent, it simply means it is now the responsibility of his children to act. He added that “from now on it is going to be fire for fire.”

Pa Adeboye said: “Some jokers said Churches should not open for three months. Who is your commander? God of Boko Haram, let the devil try any nonsense, from now on it is going to be fire for fire.”

Speaking further, the highly respected cleric popularly known as Daddy G.O alludes:
“I don’t want to say much because I know some people may want to twist it but I have searched the bible from cover to cover and there is nowhere in the bible where God said a child of God cannot defend himself, If you find the place let me know.

He explained that, Jesus Christ in the Holy scripture says, "If they slap you on the right cheek turn left" He said that one. But what if they now slap the left again, what did He say? Nothing! When God is silent, do you know the meaning of that, it simply means over to you.”

Adesanya-Davies says, "Christians are human beings, and blood flows in them and through them as every other human beings, and they know what to do, and how to respond in the right place and at the right time. The Church is matching on and the gates of hell shall not prevail, amen.

THE PETER OBI 2023 CHALLENGE.

THE PETER OBI 2023 CHALLENGE.

In all elections in 2023, particularly the presidential election, individual candidates rather than the parties will be the key factor. Party will still count but not as much as the candidate.

In the presidential election, all things considered, before Peter Obi became a presidential candidate on Labour Party platform, it was to be a straight fight between Atiku Abubakar and Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

But with the dramatic defection of Obi from PDP to Labour Party and his emergence as presidential candidate, in spite of widespread suspicion among the discerning concerning his real intentions (was he really interested in becoming President or galvanizing support for Atiku and possibly becoming his running mate?), the expectations have changed, also dramatically.

Now that the discerning believe that Obi is truly in the 2023 presidential race - because of Atiku's choice of Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate and because of the near-magical support that Obi's candidacy is receiving from across Nigeria, all has changed.

Today, it is clear that 2023 presidential election is between Tinubu and Obi. Atiku is effectively out of it, the rest of the candidates not likely to alter the scenario - even when the real campaign begins.

In fact, it is far more likely that many candidates of the smaller parties will not bother campaigning but will simply step down for either Tinubu or Obi.

Between Tinubu or Obi, who is likely to emerge winner in 2023 and President Buhari's successor? If election held today, Obi undoubtedly.

But eight months to go is a long time in electioneering campaign, and anything can happen before the E-Day in February 2023.

Tinubu, if his general election campaign is conducted classically, without religious sentiments and thuggery, can upturn Obi's early lead in public perception. And he could quite possibly emerge victorious.

A lot of hard work for both candidates, particularly Tinubu. But head or tail, 2023 promises to be an interesting presidential election year in which the incumbent party of the Federal Government of Nigeria (APC) is facing real threat from a very small party that many people were not quite sure if it still existed until Obi defected to it very recently.

Adeleke: I studied criminology… I’m prepared to tackle insecurity in Osun

Adeleke: I studied criminology… I’m prepared to tackle insecurity in Osun
Ademola Adeleke, governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says he is prepared to curb insecurity in Osun state.

The former senator said this in the governorship debate organised by the BBC on Thursday.

The state’s election is scheduled to take place on July 16.

Speaking on the issue of insecurity and how it relates to Western Security Network, better known as Amotekun, Adeleke said he will empower the outfit to enable them to tackle insecurity in the state.

He said to tackle insecurity, he will provide the necessary equipment to the security outfit in the state if elected governor.

Adeleke said he will prioritise salaries of security personnel in the state, adding that without it the outfit will be compromised.

“I studied criminology and that makes me equipped to tackle insecurity in the state. To do this, we must pay the salaries of the security workers, because if we do not, they won’t be able to work very well,” he said.

“We ask the governor where our helicopter is? If the government fails to provide necessary equipment for security outfits, how do they expect them to handle insecurity in the state?

“So, if elected governor, I’ll make sure that necessary equipment is made available for our security personnel.”

Reacting to the issue of vote buying, Adeleke said he is against it, adding that the people of Osun should vote their conscience.

“The electoral act forbids vote buying. I’m also totally against it and I advise the people of the state to shun vote buying and go out to vote their conscience,” he said.

Navy warns criminals to steer clear of Ile-Ife, environs

Navy warns criminals to steer clear of Ile-Ife, environs

NNN: Capt. Aondowase Mnguve, Commandant, Nigerian Navy Centre of Education and Training Technology(NNCETT), Ile-Ife, Osun, on Saturday warned criminals to steer clear of the ancient city and its environs.

Mnguve gave the warning after the route match and operational show of force by the officers and men of NNCETT in Ile-Ife.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the exercise commenced from the Centre, Kosere area, Ifewara road, Ile-Ife through Ilode market to the roundabout in front of Ooni’s Palace and back to the school.
The Nigerian Navy Centre of Education and Training Technology, Ile-Ife, was previously located in Apapa, Lagos and recently moved to Osun.
“This is a training institution of the Nigerian Navy; the unit here is serving dual purposes of training and operations.

“So, what we have just done today is to show our strength; our state of readiness in town, because being a new unit in town, perhaps the civilian populace might not know that we are even existing.

“Though they might have been seen some of our vehicles and motorcycles in the town, thinking that we are from outside.

“We are clearly demonstrating today that we are in Ile-Ife, and we are here to play our role of training and maintenance of security of this city and Osun State at large,” he stated.

According to him, the route match and operational show of force is inline with the National Operational directive from the headquarters of the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) for all professional schools under the Command.

Mnguve said the existence of the unit in Ile-Ife is to protect lives and property of citizens of the state.

The commandant therefore admonished all and sundry to shun any form of criminality.

He equally warned officers and men of the institution that anyone caught violating the rights of the citizens would be dealt with accordingly.

My Abductors Warned Us Not To Return To Our Church That They Have Mission To Accomplish -Segun Ajose

My Abductors Warned Us Not To Return To Our Church That They Have Mission To Accomplish -Segun Ajose
News Hub CreatorJul 2, 2022 9:40 PM

It is no longer news that the Celestial Church of Christ members who were kidnapped in Wasinmi, Ewekoro Local Government Area, Ogun State, have escaped captivity after six days.

Recall that on Monday, June 13, the kidnappers broke into the church and took Oluwasegun Ajose, the Assistant Shepherd in charge of the church, along with a few other persons.

Speaking about his experiences in captivity to The Nation Newspaper, Oluwasegun claimed that the abductors warned them not to go back to the church because they still had a task to complete.

They told us not to go back to our church for the time being since, according to them, they still have work to do in the neighborhood where our church is located. Oluwasegun was reported in The Nation Newspaper as saying.

According to the Nation Newspaper, the ransom payment for the release of Ajose and his captors included N1 million, cartons of noodles, five packs of Benson cigarettes, and rice.

Pay us 29 months’ salaries, septuagenarian, others beg Ooni

Pay us 29 months’ salaries, septuagenarian, others beg Ooni

Four ex-security guards, who claimed to have worked with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, have lamented the non-payment of their 29 months’ salaries backlog since 2017.

A 75-year-old Kolawole Faniyi, 82-year-old Rasheed Ayankeye, 76-year-old Christopher Adeola and 70-year-old Segun Adewale, in an open letter to the Ooni by their solicitor and human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Aborisade, stated that they were engaged as security guards at the Ibadan branch of Jamasco Industries Limited, a company in which Ooni was said to be a director.
In their “Open Letter to Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi over Disobedience to the Judgment of Court in NICN/IB/35/2018,” the senior citizens lamented that all their efforts to get paid their 29 months’ salaries had proved abortive.

In the protest letter, a copy which was made available to Sunday PUNCH, the solicitor explained that, “in 2006, our clients were engaged by your company as the Ibadan Branch Security Guards of Jamasco Industries Limited, a company in which Your Royal Highness is a Director.

“Despite their dedication and hard work, the N20,000-per-month salary of Mr Kolawole Faniyi, and the-N15,000-per-month-salaries of Messrs Rasheed Ayankeye, Christopher Adeola and Segun Adewale were not paid by your company for a period of 29 months (June 2015 – November 2017).

“This is despite their ceaseless demand for the payment of their outstanding salaries, via two letters written to both Jamasco Industries Limited and your good office by our Law Firm.”

The lawyer explained his clients resorted to a court action at the National Industrial Court in Ibadan, leading to a consent judgment, in which the court ordered that the ex-security guards be paid N600, 000 each by the firm.

But, according to Aborisade, the judgment has been obeyed since 2020 when it was delivered.

When contacted, Ooni’s palace spokesperson, Moses Olafare, said the monarch used to own a quarry but handed over the company to a new management long before he ascended the throne in the year 2016.

Olafare said the new owner only retained Oba Ogunwusi’s name as a director to get patronage, adding that the royal father was not an accounting officer of the company.
