BREAKING: “CBN has my approval to change Naira Notes” – Buhari, counters finance minister

BREAKING: “CBN has my approval to change Naira Notes” – Buhari, counters finance minister

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday said that the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to launch new designs and replace high value Naira notes had his support and is convinced that the nation will gain a lot by doing so.

Speaking in a Hausa radio interview with the famous journalist Halilu Ahmed Getso, and Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai to be aired Wednesday Morning on Tambari TV on Nilesat, President Buhari said reasons given to him by the CBN convinced him that the economy stood to benefit from reduction in inflation, currency counterfeiting and the excess cash in circulation.

He said he did not consider the period of three months for the change to the new notes as being short.

“People with illicit money buried under the soil will have a challenge with this but workers, businesses with legitimate incomes will face no difficulties at all.”

In the interview, the President also addressed issues of food security and national security, among others.

POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that the CBN’s announcement was met with stiff opposition from the country’s finance minister, Zainab Ahmed.

She stated that the move will negatively affect the economy and expressed sadness that the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele did not consult with her ministry before making the move.

“We were not consulted. It was an announcement that we heard,” she said.

JOINT DRIVERS WELFARE ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (JDWAN) SAYS NO GOING BACK ON 7 DAYS BOYCOTT STARTING FROM MONDAY (31st of OCTOBER) BOYCOTT.

Barely 48hrs JOINT DRIVERS WELFARE ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (JDWAN) SAYS NO GOING BACK ON 7 DAYS BOYCOTT STARTING FROM MONDAY (31st of OCTOBER) BOYCOTT.

Barely 48hrs ago, the leadership of the joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria met with Lagos State government representatives, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola and the motor park management liaison officer Mr Hakeem Odumosu (AIG rtd) in the company of our legal adviser barrister Ayo Ademiluyi.

The Lagos state government has since made no concrete response to JDWAN demands, rather, their representatives only asked for another letter to be submitted on monday, which is regarded as a joke on our part, having release press statement with concise demands, we also honoured the demand to deliver physical copy of the letters to the Lagos State government, the SSS, The Commissioner of police and commissioner for transport respectively.

The retired AIG also expressly said they can't get rid of bus stop to bus stop extortionist because they are working for the state government, he also suggested that MC oluomo can organize thugs to attack us and we will be blamed or credited for the violence, all in a failed fear mongering tactics, also the assistant to the minister for transportation threatened to arrest us and our lawyer while in their office.

The statement of threat by Hakeem Odumosu that MC oluomo could attack our members, is already happening, through sile sekoni (burger) of badagry roundabout motor park management branch, JAFO (oniba of iba) of caretaker committee, iba branch, Seyi bamgbose (student) of  Iyana iba caretaker committee branch who threatened to beat and kill drivers on Monday 31st of October. JDWAN notes that lagosians must be aware that if anything happens to our drivers, the elements named above should be held responsible

it is pertinent to note that there is an existing restraining court order granted by Justice P.O LIFU of the federal high court Ikoyi against the Lagos state government and all transport agencies, stopping them from ticketing, bus stop levies, motor park levies, dues and any form of extortion from commercial drivers with suit no: FHC/L/CS/224/2022 between applicant barrister olukoya ogungbeje, transport Union society of Nigeria (TUSON) and respondents NURTW, RTEAN, NARTO, MUSILIU AKINSANYA (MC OLUOMO), MOHAMMED MUSA, LAWAL YUSUF OTHMAN, LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT, ARTTONEY GENERAL OF LAGOS STATE, INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF STATE SECURITY SERVICE.

it is sad that the representatives of Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu are mocking Lagos drivers' predicament and  are disinterested in stopping the major factor causing high cost of living in Lagos, by asking for another letter and demanding that we call off the boycott without addressing our five demands.

Drivers and commuters have had a brimful of extortion and harassment from the motor park management and caretaker committee thugs popularly known as Agbero. it is also visible to the blind in Lagos that the cost of goods and services is a consequence of Agbero's extortion, no goods can be delivered and  95% working class resident can be transported without the service of commercial drivers. The unfettered and violent extortion by the Lagos government agents has not only increased transportation fare beyond the affordability of workers but also made every goods and services out of reach of the poor lagosians.

Our demands are clear and sacrosanct!
1. Obey the court order

2. We kick against Paying motor park thugs at every bus stop. All illegal money at garages and parks must stop

3. Harassment of law enforcement agencies & intimidation with guns, Cutlass, broken bottles by LASTMA, task force & RRS must end immediately.

4. Lagos State government should build and assign more bus stops for commercial use to avoid arrest by lastma for dropping off passengers at existing bus stops which are known to commuters as official bus stops.

Once again, we are calling all Lagos commercial drivers, commuters, civil society organisations and residents to observe the 7 days boycott on Monday 31st of October,  stay at home and not ply any road for commercial purposes or block any road whatsoever. All drivers should enjoy their day with their families without extortion and violence of the Agberos of motor park management and caretaker committee since the government has refused or show any sign of stopping the state approved extortion.

We are also giving the Lagos state government and the thuggish motorpark extortion agency a 7 day ultimatum to respond to our demands.

JDWAN and all justice loving Citizens should remain law abiding, should refrain from blocking the roads, avoid violent confrontation and demonstrations.

Atiku Plans To Force Fulani Settlements All Over The South’ – Fayose

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party, PDP in the 2019 elections
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party, PDP in the 2019 elections
Fayose, a hotelier, alleged that Atiku would push the Fulanisation agenda of Nigeria if he is elected president in 2023.

In a Facebook post, Fayose alleged that Atiku would force Fulani settlement in all the local government areas of Southern Nigeria.

According to Fayose, Atiku would install Fulani Emirs in the Southern part of the country.

“Atiku will force Fulani settlement in all LGAs of Southern Nigeria. Install Fulani Emirs!” Fayose wrote.

The incumbent Nigerian leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, is of Fulani extraction; and had been accused of trying to Islamize and Fulanize Nigeria.

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Wednesday October 26, 2022 called on Atiku Abubakar to apologise, over his outburst against him and people of Benue.

The governor also told Atiku not to think that Fulanis alone could make him the president.

The former vice president drew the ire of the governor during the interactive forum organised by the Arewa Consultative Forum in Kaduna recently when he (Atiku) accused Ortom of profiling Fulanis.

Atiku had also in his condolence message said, “When our people are well integrated into communities where they live, work, pay taxes and raise their children, they’d be obligated to reciprocate the love and acceptance”

However, Ortom on Wednesday denied that he profiled Fulani herdsmen and claim that his people stole cows from his farm.

Morocco 2023: Nigeria Dream Team pockets Ahmed Musa’s N1 million with Tanzania triumph

Nigeria outwitted the East Africans to set up a date with Guinea as the race for Morocco 2023 heats up

Nigeria U-23 national men’s team carved out a hard-fought 2-0 win over Tanzania in Ibadan on Saturday to advance to the third round of the u23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series.

The Dream Team concluded the second-round fixtures with a 3-1 aggregate victory over the Tanzanians.

After battling to a 1-1 draw in Tanzania last weekend, coach Salisu Yusuf and his boys knew any manner of win on home soil would see off the challenge of the East Africans.

And after a goalless first half, Timileyin Ogunniyi broke the deadlock for the Dream Team in the 62nd minute.

Success Makanjuola doubled Nigeria’s advantage via a well-struck penalty kick seven minutes later.

Hard as they tried, the Tanzanians could not break down the Nigerian defence until the end of the encounter.

With the two-goal victory, the Dream Team will get a cash gift of N1 million from Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa.

The Sivasspor forward had promised the u23 side five hundred thousand naira for every goal scored against the Tanzanians in Ibadan.

KWARA SDP DISMISSES “INDUCEMENT TO WITHDRAW” STORY, SAYS CANDIDATE SETS TO BECOME NEXT GOVERNOR

KWARA SDP DISMISSES “INDUCEMENT TO WITHDRAW” STORY, SAYS CANDIDATE SETS TO BECOME NEXT GOVERNOR

The Kwara State chapter of the Social Democratic Party, SDP has dissociated the party and its gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 election, Alhaji Hakeem Oladimeji Lawal from the speculation being floated in the media about alleged moves to induce the candidate out of the 2023 gubernatorial race.

National Pilot Newspaper in its 23rd October, 2022 edition, had speculated that in a desperate move to secure his re-election bid, the incumbent Governor of the State, Alhaji Abdulraham Abdulrazaq is allegedly dangling huge monetary bait through a third party  before both Lawal and Gobir, the candidate of the YPP to drop their gubernatorial ambition to boost his re-election bid.

In a release from its Media office in Ilorin on Monday, the SDP maintained that the speculation is a concoction brewed from the pit of hell by a newspaper that is obviously working to resuscitate the comatose dream and aspiration of its patrons.

The party added that the gubernatorial bid of its candidate which started in 2015, has never and would never be about him as an individual, rather it’s about building a people’s movement that will berth a government the people can own and call their own.

It maintained that the party is fully prepared for the 2023 election and Alhaji Lawal, its candidate is set to become the next governor of the State courtesy of the popularity of his candidacy across the length and breadth of the State.

“Nothing has and will ever make Alhaji Hakeem Oladimeji Lawal, abandon, mortgage and betray the trust, aspirations and yearnings of thousands of Kwarans, for pecuniary benefits. No true born Kwaran, will be at peace with the present realities of the day in Kwara State, and nobody with a living conscience will align with the serial tormentors and deceivers of the impoverished masses of Kwara,” the party averred.

It also called on its teeming supporters to ignore the media speculation which is at best, a mark of desperation by those who are scared of the looming and embarrassing defeat that awaits them at the polls.

According to the party, “Kwara SDP is fully prepared and the people are ready to embrace the new face of Kwara transformation and progress which our candidate, Alhaji Lawal represents. The opposition elements are obviously jittery of their embarrassing slim chance and are therefore cooking up stories to confuse unwary voters and citizens.”

It also recalled that of recent, the party has been receiving decampees into its fold across the state, which has been sending fears into the minds of the opposition. The party noted that just last Sunday, its candidate, Alhaji Lawal received a heroic welcome, even  at Adewole, the ancestral home the incumbent Governor  Abdulrazaq. The same scene has been replicated in Kwara South and Kwara North of recent.

The party also assured that the SDP and its candidate represent the best deal for Kwarans in terms of programmes and manifestoes to take the state to the promised land of progress and prosperity.

It added that “hopefully, by this time next year, Kwara will be better positioned, with a pro-masses and purposeful leadership that prioritizes and amplifies the collective yearnings and aspirations of Kwarans. While we are always open to collaborative efforts aimed at collectively edging out the anti-people tendencies holding the destiny of Kwara and Kwarans hostage, we state unequivocally that Kwara’s total liberation is non-negotiable.”

We’ll Ensure You’re Removed Before You Investigate Wike, CUPP Tells Ayu

We’ll Ensure You’re Removed Before You Investigate Wike, CUPP Tells Ayu

ABUJA – The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) on Saturday reacted to the plan by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to look into the activities of the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike.

The party had on Friday said there is ongoing process looking into issues in the party, while reacting to the alleged endorsement of Lagos State Governor, Sanwo-Olu by Wike.

Reacting to the party’s position to look into Wike’s activities, the spokesperson of CUPP, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, in a statement on Saturday, came down heavily on the National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, over the reported move by the party to investigate Wike.

According to the statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Olugunagba, had also recently stated that the PDP will look into Wike’s recent activities and decide on what to do while responding to questions on the governor’s public endorsement of Governor Babajide Sanwu-Olu of Lagos State, considering the fact that the PDP also has a governorship candidate in the state.

But Ugochinyere threatened that he will put machinery in place to ensure that Ayu vacates the seat of the party’s National Chairman before he will use the office to set up a panel against Wike and other members of his camp.

The CUPP spokesman said: “I have learnt with regret that despite my earlier warning against the move, the leadership of the PDP under the watch of the heavily dented Ayu is bent on going ahead to probe Governor Wike for anti-party activities.

“This is clearly a case of a dog destined to get lost that will not listen to the hunter’s whistle.

“Let it be known that I will work with other like minds in the PDP, who want victory for the party in the coming elections to ensure that Ayu leaves office as the National Chairman.

“Not only that. I will not stop at Ayu’s exit. I will also ensure that he is investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for offences bordering on corruption that we have credible evidence to prove.

“Those of us who are interested in the future of this party and this country can no longer fold our hands while Ayu will allow the labour of our heroes past be in vain. Ayu will be hearing from us in due course.”

QUALITIES NIGERIANS MUST VOTE IN NEXT PRESIDENT -Primate Ayodele

QUALITIES NIGERIANS MUST VOTE IN NEXT PRESIDENT
-Primate Ayodele

Top man of God, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has explained in detail the kind of presidential candidate Nigerians should vote for in the 2023 general elections.

Ayodele noted some attributes that should be found in the next president of the country in order to make the nation better than it is at the moment.

The cleric said Nigeria needs someone who is intelligent, has the fear of God, has feelings for the poor, and is intentional about making the economy better.

He revealed that the nation is in dire need of a leader who isn’t biased and sectional in anything because this is necessary to keep the country together.

He cautioned the citizens against voting for a president that will be a puppet to the past leaders.

“This is the kind of person Nigerians should vote for as the next president of the country, someone who will make Nigeria better, one who is intelligent and has the fear of God. Someone who has feelings for the poor and is intentional about making the economy better. One who isn’t sectional and doesn’t have religious bias.’’

“We need someone who will create employment for the youths, who will fight corruption and won’t be sectional, this present government is sectional in fighting corruption and insecurity. We need someone who will make a promise and fulfil it, someone who will take Nigeria as his own nation and won’t rule as a regional leader. Someone who will take education seriously and not use payment of workers’ salaries as a campaign. One who will look after the pensioners.’’

“We need someone who has the mind to do restructuring, one who won’t be a puppet to past leaders, someone who will reorganize the country, who will do infrastructure, invest in agriculture.

“The point is every one of them has been in one government or the other but surely, one among them will be better than the others. We need someone who will shun ethnic bias, and handle security properly, one who is bold and call a spade a spade. We need someone who will fight injustice because there is corruption in the judiciary.’’

Speaking on how Nigerians can know the one who truly has these attributes, Primate Ayodele revealed that none of the top contenders have all of these excellently but God will touch the mind of Nigerians to be able to see the one who is better than others.

‘’This is the kind of leader God described to me and who among them has this attribute? God said he will touch the heart of Nigerians to see someone who has these. Although among them, none of them has it excellently and we can’t have an excellent leader in 2023 but we will get someone who can make it better than it is now.’’

‘’This might interest you or not but this is the kind of government Nigeria needs. We can be deceived by the former leaders but only God can help us choose the right person, he won’t deceive us.’’

ARREST OF KWARA JOURNALISTS: POLICE UNDER COLONIAL HANGOVER

20TH OCTOBER, 2022

PRESS STATEMENT

ARREST OF KWARA JOURNALISTS: POLICE UNDER COLONIAL HANGOVER

The Community Outreach for Development and Welfare Advocacy (CODWA), strongly condemn the arrests of messrs Dare Akogun and Abdulrashed Akogun, both of Sobi FM by the Kwara State Police Command. It is a display of primitive power and repression reminiscences of the colonial administration in Nigeria during the Native Authority; when the police is known for betraying their responsibility to protect Nigerian citizens but instead preyed on them.

One wonder how long it would take to reform the policing system in Nigeria?

Rather than uphold loyalty to the state,  protect the rights of citizens as contained in
the 1999 Constitution (As Amended), and International instruments to which Nigeria is a signatory; the Police prefers to continue to be minion to Political office holders against the CITIZENRY.

These uncivilized attitudes have continued to shrink civic space, and has been one of the threats to democratic process and reforms in Nigeria.

The Kwara State government wanted the Journalists to retract their stories and apologise; this is hilarious and could be likend to one of James Hardley Chase title "THE QUILTY ARE AFRAID."

It becomes worrisome, for the Chief Press Secretary to the governor who is a practising journalist to write the commissioner of police to arrest his colleagues over farcical, petty and Illusionary exigencies. This is a sore to press freedom.

If the citizens are silent over the subjugation of their fundamental Human Rights of expressions, the Kwara State government would hang white albatrosses around their necks as a mark of victory over JUSTICE!

We stand on the side of press freedom; and, equally in solidarity with the duo of Dare Akogun and Abdulrasheed Akogun

Abuja—A Nigerian Air Force pilot, Flt Lt. Ebiakpo Chapele, who died during a combat mission in the Northeast was finally buried last Thursday in Abuja.

Sources disclosed that DNA verification was done to confirm that the remains were that of Chapele, following which the family was able to have closure.

Flt Lt. Chapele was buried with honours at the Military Cemetery in  Abuja.

The ceremony was private, with only colleagues, friends and family members attending, as it was not publicly announced by the Air Force.

“Today we finally bury a son, a beloved brother, Uncle and husband,” the pilot’s sister, Tracy Chapele, said on Twitter.

“A patriot who since he was taught about Gowon/Ironsi in Primary 6, insisted we start calling him ‘Major’ cos he’d serve Nigeria. I salute your courage little bro,” Tracy, a presenter on Wazobia FM, added.

The two Flight Lieutenants were conducting a mission in support of the counter-insurgency operations on March 31 2021, when their aircraft disappeared from radar and went down in the famous Sambisa forest, a former stronghold of the Boko Haram terror group.

At the time of the incident, the Air Force had stated that an “extensive search and rescue effort” was going on, by ground and air.

Reports had indicated that the body of Chapele and his aircraft were missing before his body was discovered.

A year later, on March 26 it was announced that soldiers on a clearance/fighting patrol as part of a large-scale offensive in Sambisa named ‘Operation Desert Sanity,’ discovered the wreckage of an Air Force Alpha Jet with the designation NAF 475, Chapele and Abolarinwa’s plane.

The Air Force noted at the time that further explorations were “ongoing.”

Contacted on the development, Director, NAF Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet confirmed that the burial was held.

Governor Shuts Down NTA, 3 Other Media Houses For Covering PDP Rally

Bello Matawalle, the governor of Zamfara State
Bello Matawalle, the governor of Zamfara state, has ordered the closure of the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, and three other media houses in the state.

Other affected media houses included Gamji TV, Al-Umma TV, and Pride FM Radio, all are located in Gusau, the state capital, The Punch reported.

While announcing the shutdown in a radio broadcast, Ibrahim Dosara, the state commissioner for information, stated that the media houses were shut down for alleged violations of professional ethics.

Why did Zamfara shut down NTA?

Dosara stated disclosed that the affected media houses attended the political rally organised by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, while the government had banned political rallies for security reasons in the state.

His statement reads in part: “The state government has suspended all political activities in the state due to security challenges but the PDP ignored the order and held a rally in Gusau, the state capital, where one person was killed and 18 others were injured.

“The four media houses, NTA, Gamji TV, Al-Umma TV, and Pride FM radio, were also at the event to cover the occasion even though they were aware of the ban on political rallies by the state government.

Panel beater who spent 8 years in prison after he was arrested for failing to stop suspected criminals being chased by soldiers regains his freedom

Panel beater who spent 8 years in prison after he was arrested for failing to stop suspected criminals being chased by soldiers regains his freedom

A panel beater simply identified as Ola, who spent 8 years in prison after he was arrested for failing to stop suspected criminals being chased by soldiers, has regained his freedom. A non-governmental organization, Headfort foundation, that helped in securing Ola's release shared the sad story online. Read below…''Ola was a Panel beater working at Alaba, in Lagos State, Nigeria.Sometime in May 2014, Ola was on his way back from work when he saw some people run by him. A few seconds later, soldiers ran after those persons. To his dismay, the soldiers returned angrily and questioned why he didn't stop the persons that ran by him. He explained to the soldiers that he didn't know them or why they were running and couldn't just have stopped them from running. His response infuriated the soldiers more and they took him to base. The senior officer at the Barracks refused to let the soldiers keep him at the Barracks so they took him to the police station and reported that he didn't prevent the escape of the people they were chasing. The Officers at Orile Police Station moved him alongside other suspects taken to SARS Office Ikeja where he was later charged to Court for the offence of Armed robbery when he couldn't meet up with bail demands. The family members did their best and got him legal representation. After a while, they could no longer afford to pay so the lawyer withdrew his appearance.Since 2014, he remained in custody with no lawyer representing him until July 2022 when he got Headfort Foundation's contact from an inmate and he called to explain his ordeal. Our Lawyer, Awolu Itunuoluwa Ruth took his brief and traced his case to Lagos State High Court TBS. She began representing him for free.On Tuesday, just like every other day in which his case had come up for a trial, there was no witness. The prosecution informed the Court that they intend to call official witnesses who happened to be Police Officers but they are not familiar with the witnesses and do not have their contact details or means of reaching them.Ola, who had been languishing in prison since 2014 awaiting trial was immediately released by the Court, and the charges against him were struck out.''

Following the arrest, the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) and some youths staged a peaceful protest at Police Headquarters, Ilorin to demand for immediate release of Abdulrasheed and Dare Akogun.

Kwara SDP condemn Ajakaiye for using State forces to victimize dissenting voices

Kwara SDP condemn Ajakaiye for using State forces to victimize dissenting voices

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kwara state, has condemned Kwara state government and its agents, for its habitual use of State forces to harass and victimize dissenting voices within the State.

The Party particularly frowned at one Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, for using state powers to detain two journalists in the state.

The two journalists who are blood brothers, are sons of Kunle Akogun, a veteran journalist and the Director of Corporate Affairs of the University of Ilorin. Whilst Abdulrasheed Akogun is the publisher of Fresh Insight News/TV, a platform popular for exposing systemic corruption, Dare Akogun is a reporter with Sobi FM, Ilorin.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP)  in a statement signed by its State Chairman, Alhaji Azeez Afolabi, said it was disheartening for a journalist like Rafiu Ajakaye to subject fellow journalists like himself to unjust treatment using state power, while reminding him that his appointment has an expiry date.

The statement reads in part, “The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kwara state finds it distasteful to learn of the unnecessary detention of two journalists, incidentally, from the same mother.

“These two journalists who have in no small measure contributed to fighting systemic corruption via their mediums, are prides to the state, their integrity also worthy of emulation, have been unjustly incarcerated.

“We call on the Nigerian police to release them immediately or charge them to court first thing tomorrow morning, as the Akoguns are ready to defend themselves in a competent court of law, we urge the police not to be a political tool in the hands of the inept APC government in the state.

“And for Ajakaye, we use this medium to remind him that his appointment has an expiry date, and Kwarans are waiting to kick-out the inept government he is serving in the forthcoming polls”, it concluded.

BREAKING: ASUU executive council holds all-night meeting over strike

The meeting of the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities will hold overnight in Abuja, The PUNCH has reliably learnt.

The meeting which is a meeting of the leadership of the union was convened to allow the leadership of the union take the final decision on the protracted strike.

Speaking with our correspondent in Abuja, a top source said, “We will have a meeting today and it will last overnight so that we will be given enough time to deliberate and make a conclusion.”

When asked if the union will call off the strike, the source declined comments.

The PUNCH reports that ASUU had on Monday, February 14,2022 declared a strike at the University of Lagos. The union had accused the Federal Government of failing to honour some of the agreements reached.

ASUU had demanded for the renegotiation of the ASUU-FG 2009 agreement, release of revitalisation fund for universities, release of earned academic allowances among others.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, dragged the striking lecturers to court over what he tagged as “irreconcilable differences.”

The national industrial court however, ordered the lecturers back to work.

The ruling was appealed at the appellate court in Abuja but was however not granted hearing as the judge ordered ASUU to obey first the ruling of the lower court.

Branches of ASUU had on Wednesday held congresses to decide the next decision.

ASUU: ‘Lecturers Will Get Backlog Of Salaries But Students Will Pay Accumulated Fees, Rents’- Unizik Undergraduates Lament

As hope brightens for a possible call-off of the eight months’ industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, some students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Wednesday, reacted to their accumulated house rents.

One of them, Ejike, who lives at a private hostel at Ifite, said, “I pray that we resume our academic activities. But my greatest fear is the accumulation of my house rent.

“It expired in April, and I have not renewed it because of the strike. I have not been answering my landlord’s calls because he has been threatening to eject me even when I am not in school.”

Ifeoma Ejike is in the Faculty of Engineering of the university. She said, “Students are the victims of this ASUU strike. The lecturers and non-academic staff members will be paid their backlogs, but students will pay the accumulated school fees, arrears of house rents, hurried academic activities, among others. The federal government should also look into our plights.”

A landlord, who does not want his name mentioned, said, “We built out houses to make profits. Some borrowed from banks. We also train our kids and feed. The rented houses are out investment. Tenants must settle my rent totally. I have about thirty students in my house.”

ASUU embarked on the strike on February 14 this year to demand the fulfillment of FG’s agreements with the union, including appropriate funding of university education.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja last week ordered ASUU to call off the strike ‘with immediate effect.

ASUU: THE CONSCIENCE OF NIGERIAN UNiVERSITY EDUCATION*

ASUU: THE CONSCIENCE OF NIGERIAN UNiVERSITY EDUCATION

I make this contribution in view of the logjam between the Nigerian Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

I have been privileged to serve in two Nigerian universities for an unbroken period of fifty years (1972- 2022), at Ibadan from July 1972 until retirement in 2010, and as a full-time Contract Professor from 2010 – 2022 at Umudike.

In between, I spent sabbatical and research leaves at Maiduguri, Nsukka, Awka, and Umudike, as well as at Davis, California and Giessen, Germany. I went to Ibadan on a Federal scholarship in September 1964, became a university scholar in 1965, and graduated in 1972, in part because my course, veterinary medicine, took five years after A Levels; the Civil War stole three years of my youth.

My path to Ibadan was made possible because sitting in the famous November 1961 University of Cambridge West African School Certificate examinations in my Anglican secondary school at Aba, I came top of my class with six As and one credit, an aggregate of 12, and a division one certificate.

I spent 1962 and 1963 for the Higher School Certificate at the famous Government College, Umuahia, and also topped my class with A, B, B and A, A, B passes in the Universities of Cambridge and London examinations, respectively. Ibadan studentship was tough and demanding, but I also excelled, passing out with three distinctions and winning several prizes.

I joined the academic staff at Ibadan as Research Fellow/Lecturer two weeks after graduation, got a master’s degree from Glasgow in 1975, a PhD from Ibadan in 1977, and rose through the academic ranks to become Professor in October 1983.

I am not advertising myself as I am well aware that our abilities come from God, and we should not be proud or arrogant about our endowments. My point is that my profile resembles closely the profiles of most Lecturers and Professors in the generations before me, in my generation and thereafter. The idea of the university grew out of the Church grammar schools in thirteenth-century Europe and was then called studium generale or universitatis, a place where educated elite from many countries gathered in Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, etc, to teach, in Latin, bright students selected from all over Europe.

The practice in universities worldwide then and today is that the best graduates especially those with first and second-class upper degrees in each class are encouraged and enticed to enrol for higher degrees and thereafter to join the academic staff as Lecturers.

When I came to Ibadan, such graduates were awarded postgraduate scholarships to study in Nigeria and some of the best Universities in the world, and on completion of their Ph.D.s were employed as Lecturers.

This is because universities worldwide recognize that the brightest students make better postgraduate students, better researchers and Lecturers. Second-tier graduates with third-class and pass degrees are very valuable elsewhere in the industry, government administration, and secondary school teaching.

*In the colonial and immediate post-colonial years, Professors in Nigerian universities earned 3,000 pounds consolidated annually while Permanent Secretaries earned 2,750 pounds.*

The Permanent Secretaries and Professors had equivalent perquisites of office. During the Civil War, the Permanent Secretaries worked themselves up the relevance ladder while the soldiers were on the war front.

As the war ended, the soldiers became the de facto rulers of Nigeria for decades and often employed some Lecturers and Professors as ministers, advisers and commissioners.

With time, the soldiers elevated themselves above everybody, and Permanent Secretaries, led by the super permanent secretaries of the war period, also manoeuvred themselves ahead of the Professors who had no one to appreciate them, not the Permanent Secretaries most of who did not smell first class or second upper degrees, not the ministers who came from different academic backgrounds, and not the soldiers most of who left secondary school with lower grades of passes in school certificate examinations while some, in the early years, did not even pass school certificate.

The soldiers and civil servants shared the same grudge against academics, and may have said to themselves: “you, our former mates, were feeling superior, but now we are in charge”.

There were no strikes in Nigerian Universities from 1948 to 1973 until August 1973 during my first year of service at Ibadan.

Following a dispute with Lecturers and Professors, General Gowon did the unthinkable: rather than negotiate, perhaps under the advice of civil servants, he asked the Lecturers to pack out of their university residences. It was somewhat gratifying to see him start as a first-year undergraduate in England after he was overthrown!

The non-stop military regimes of Buhari, Babangida, Abdusalam and Abacha dealt devastating blows on the universities in two areas: degradation of research and teaching facilities, and pauperization of workers generally including academic staff.

While some of them said they were giving their today for our tomorrow, they actually took our yesterday and tomorrow.

In 1980, my salary as Senior Lecturer was N770 per month which was $1,500 (N1.00 = $1.90), it was N1,500 ($2,250; N1.00 = $1.50) in 1985 as Professor. By the time Abacha finished with us, my salary as Professor after 15 years in that position had plummeted to N8,500 per month in 1998, a mere $100 since he pushed the naira to N85 to $1. It was under this situation that ASUU embarked on a seven-month strike in 1996.

Abacha ignored ASUU, conceded nothing, and later broke the strike by following Gowon’s example by asking the pauperized academic staff to pack out of their university residences within 24 hours or face forceful eviction.

It is instructive that I made two short time research visits to an international research institute in Kenya in 1992 and 1993 where I, the same me, was paid $3,000 tax-free per month, with free furnished accommodation and a car after work daily!

The consequences of the decay in the university teaching and research facilities, and the poor pay which made it impossible for academics to pay their bills and so trek about the campus during the Babangida years and worsening during the Abacha years, led to a massive brain drain of academics to Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, USA, and Saudi Arabia for the medical personnel; indeed anywhere they could earn dollars, as small as $1,000 or less per month for Professors.

Four of the five Professors in my small department with a staff strength of eight academic staff emigrated, three of them to the USA. My departmental colleagues and others who left were some of Nigeria’s best brains, mostly trained abroad with Nigerian money, and over 98% of them never came back.

To rub in the disdain that Babangida and soldiers had for academics, he gave out subsidized cars to all categories of public servants, including soldiers, policemen, customs men, and civil servants, but none to Lectures and Professors. Fortunately, President Obasanjo hiked Professors salary to N100,000 per month (referred to as gbemu Aremu by my colleagues) in 2000, thereby effectively terminating the brain drain.

A second unsavory consequence of the poor salaries paid to university workers and the poor research and teaching facilities was that the career choices of the brightest graduates changed; instead of their traditional return to postgraduate studies on the campus as proud prospective academic staffs, they poured into the private sector where they earned some N30,000 – N50,000 per month, compared to the paltry N8,500 paid to their Professors.

In Ibadan, the Department of Economics produced six first-class graduates in one session and all of them went to the private sector. Since the brightest students refused to return to take up academic jobs, the university had no alternative but to lower the standards by bringing in less qualified graduates to fill the vacancies that arose.

As Head of my Department in 1988, I pleaded with the best graduate who led the class consistently to take up one of the three vacant positions created by the resignation of four Professors in the Department. I had to descend to her, a fresh graduate because there were no applicants with masters and PhD around.

She bluntly refused to cite poor pay and scanty research grants and facilities, and I could not persuade her by reminding her that gifted persons have a duty to the nation to return to the campus and teach future generations.

A third consequence is that whereas Nigerian universities attracted students and academia from the international community in the sixties to the early nineties, you can now hardly find one international students and academic even in our so-called first-tier universities today that once attracted many of them. Our universities cannot today be rightly called studium generale or Universitatis in the real sense of the names, but rather studium locale.

Fourthly, based mainly on my research publications funded mostly by international organizations derived from my periods in Glasgow, California, and Kenya, I was admitted to the fellowship of the Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS) whose first members included titans like Chike Obi, Awojobi, Ezeilo, Bassir, Oyenuga, etc, and which still remains an elite club for Nigerian academics.

The FAS enabled me to contest successfully for the fellowship of the World Academy of Sciences (FTWAS) in 2012; this academy embodies top scientists from the whole world with the exception of Europe and North America.

Attendance of conferences of TWAS in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2014, and Vienna, Austria in 2016, made me realize, most sadly, that Nigerian science is now, unlike before, lagging far behind those of China, India, Singapore, Malaysia and even South Africa based of the quality of papers presented.

Democracy brought legislators into the fray, and they are carting away a large chunk of national wealth by using threats of impeachment of the Executives at state and federal levels as a potent weapon. Their salaries run into millions monthly, and Senators awarded themselves some N25 million monthly as constituency allowance that they don’t need to account for.

I imagine that their wardrobe allowance is more than the N450.000 total monthly salary paid to a Professor at the bar today! Since you need a school certificate to be a Senator and even President of Nigeria, our Senate and House of Representatives are full of persons who would not qualify to stand before university students.

Nigerian universities have always effectively managed their funds judiciously as academics can never tolerate corruption, in part because the rigid hierarchy in the civil service or armed forces does not exist in the university as Professors see the leadership as equals.

The imposition of IPPIS on the universities, which is a major factor in the current dispute, is a gross mistake. Can you imagine all the universities in England or Canada receiving their salaries from one organization? When it was introduced, I saw it as a portal for monumental corruption.

The civil servants, soldiers and politicians have combined to control the politics and economy of Nigeria, and have conspired to rubbish the Lecturers and Professors who are undoubtedly the best brains in any country including Nigeria.

The success of Britain in colonizing many countries and now creating a massive Commonwealth of over two billion persons derived from the contributions of the graduates of Oxford and Cambridge since the thirteen century.

Japan, China, Taiwan, Israel, Singapore and Korea, with very few natural resources, have soared economically because of the solid education given to their citizens; they have recognized their brightest citizens, giving them adequate pay and funding for research for national development and to teach their students.

Nigeria is now the poverty capital of the world and has the largest number of children not in school in the whole world despite huge natural endowments, has abundant petroleum but cannot refine ordinary petrol and so imports all the petrol needed by citizens at great costs all because our rulers do not appreciate education and merit.

Crucial jobs are given to those who have the preferred names and belong to the same religion as the rulers, while the geniuses in our midst are ignored. A Professor, with all his intellect and learning, should not be paid less than N2 million a month, still, a pittance compared to a Senator’s emoluments.

This will encourage many bright youths to aspire to become Professors. With good lecturers and professors, and adequate laboratory and teaching facilities, our universities will return to their past glories of the sixties and seventies when our degrees compared well with those of the best in the world.

Unless the government wakes up to its responsibilities, another wave of brain drain, from now on, will destroy our universities irreparably. As the universities decay, Nigeria, what is left of her once beautiful possibilities, will decay into insignificance.
