2026 WCQ Playoff: Adams on why Nigeria couldn’t score in first-half against Gabon

2026 WCQ Playoff: Adams on why Nigeria couldn’t score in first-half against Gabon

Super Eagles forward Akor Adams has explained why Nigeria failed to find the breakthrough in the first half of their 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff clash against Gabon on Thursday evening, according to Daily Post.

The opening 45 minutes ended goalless despite Nigeria creating several promising moments. Adams, who eventually put Nigeria ahead in the 78th minute, said the team had opportunities before the break but lacked the sharpness needed to convert them. His goal was later cancelled out by a Gabon equaliser, pushing the match into extra-time before the Super Eagles sealed a 4-1 win.

Speaking in the mixed zone after the match, the Sevilla striker expressed his joy at scoring again for Nigeria but stressed that the team needed better execution in the early stages of the game. “We prepared for it and we got some opportunities in the first half. We were not as effective as we were in the second half, and you could see we scored four goals in the other part of the game,” Adams said to Victor Modo.

He also spoke about his pride in representing the country and the emotion that comes with wearing the national colours. “I play with my heart.”
Adams added that he was grateful for the win and relieved that all players finished the game without injuries, noting that the focus now shifts to Sunday’s final playoff encounter.

Nigeria will face DR Congo in the final round after Congo defeated Cameroon 1-0 in the other semi-final tie.
