They gave me POS and want me to open a dollar account.”

NGIJ Honours Dele Giwa at 40, Announces Annual Lecture, Urges FG to Immortalise Journalism Icon

NGIJ Honours Dele Giwa at 40, Announces Annual Lecture, Urges FG to Immortalise Journalism Icon

_Guild demands justice for slain investigative journalist, says four decades without accountability must not become a symbol of impunity_

The Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ) has paid tribute to the late veteran journalist, Dele Giwa, on the 40th anniversary of his assassination, describing his death as a defining moment in Nigeria’s struggle for press freedom, accountability and democratic governance.

Giwa, co-founder and pioneer Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch magazine, was killed by a parcel bomb delivered to his Lagos residence on October 19, 1986, during the military era. Forty years after the incident, his assassination remains unresolved, with no one held accountable for the murder.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NGIJ President, Mallam Abdulrahman Aliagan, and the Guild’s Secretary, Rowland Olonishuwa, described Giwa as a symbol of journalistic courage whose commitment to fearless reporting helped shape investigative journalism in Nigeria.

The Guild said Giwa’s legacy transcends his professional achievements, embodying journalism’s responsibility to question authority, expose wrongdoing, defend the public interest and hold those in power accountable.
“Forty years after Dele Giwa was murdered, Nigeria must not allow his sacrifice to fade into history. His life represented the courage to investigate the powerful and defend the public’s right to know. His death remains a painful reminder of the price journalists can pay for pursuing the truth,” NGIJ stated.

As part of efforts to preserve Giwa’s legacy and strengthen investigative journalism, NGIJ announced plans to establish the Dele Giwa Annual Public Lecture on Investigative Journalism, which will be the Guild’s maiden public lecture.
The initiative will provide a platform for journalists, media executives, policymakers, academics, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to discuss press freedom, investigative reporting, democratic accountability and the safety of journalists.

Beyond commemorating Giwa, the annual lecture is intended to promote professional independence, courage, accuracy and ethical responsibility while exploring practical solutions to the challenges confronting investigative journalism in Nigeria.
“We do not want Dele Giwa to be remembered only through anniversary tributes. We want his name to become a permanent institution in advancing investigative journalism in Nigeria,” the Guild declared.

NGIJ called on the Federal Government to immortalise Giwa in recognition of his contributions to Nigerian journalism, democratic accountability and the public’s right to information.

The Guild urged the government to consider naming a public institution, national journalism centre, media research facility or another appropriate national monument after the late journalist.

It said such recognition would affirm the vital role of journalists in nation-building and inspire younger generations to embrace courage, integrity and service to the public interest.

According to NGIJ, national recognition should extend beyond political leaders and public officeholders to include professionals whose sacrifices have significantly advanced democratic development and the protection of citizens’ rights.

While celebrating Giwa’s contributions, the Guild expressed concern that the circumstances surrounding his assassination remain unresolved four decades later.

It called on the Federal Government, law enforcement agencies and relevant judicial authorities to renew efforts to establish the circumstances of his death, review available evidence and pursue credible investigative leads in accordance with the law.

NGIJ warned that the passage of time must not extinguish the quest for justice or diminish the state’s responsibility to investigate the killing of a Nigerian citizen and distinguished journalist.
“A nation cannot adequately honour a journalist who died in the pursuit of truth while allowing the questions surrounding his murder to remain unanswered.

Remembrance must be accompanied by action, and tributes must translate into a renewed commitment to justice, accountability and the protection of journalists,” the Guild said.

NGIJ urged Nigerian journalists, particularly young and aspiring investigative reporters, to draw inspiration from Giwa’s courage while upholding the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, verification, independence and ethical conduct.

The Guild reaffirmed its commitment to promoting credible, independent and impact-driven investigative journalism through professional training, institutional partnerships, public-interest investigations and accountability initiatives.

It also called on media organisations, government institutions, civil society groups, development partners and the public to support efforts to improve journalists’ safety, strengthen newsroom independence and create an enabling environment for responsible reporting.

As preparations begin for its maiden Dele Giwa Annual Public Lecture on Investigative Journalism, NGIJ said its objective is to transform remembrance into sustained action in support of press freedom, professional excellence, justice and democratic accountability.

The Guild urged the Federal Government and the media industry to ensure that Giwa’s legacy is remembered not only for the tragedy of his unresolved assassination but also for his enduring contribution to the pursuit of truth.

“Dele Giwa may have been silenced 40 years ago, but the ideals he represented must never be silenced. His legacy must live on in every journalist who dares to investigate, every report that exposes wrongdoing, every institution held accountable and every citizen empowered by the truth,” NGIJ concluded.

Dare Akogun, 27 others win UK MEET fellowship

Dare Akogun, 27 others win UK MEET fellowship

An Assistant News and  Politics Editor with PUNCH Weekend titles, Dare Akogun, has been selected alongside 27 other journalists and content creators for the 2026 UK Media Excellence for Emerging Technologies Fellowship.

The three-month fellowship, delivered by Imperial College London through Imperial Global Ghana, with support from the British High Commission in Accra and the UK Government in Nigeria, aims to strengthen science journalism and improve public understanding of emerging technologies.

The President of Imperial College London, Prof Hugh Brady, announced the 2026 Ghanaian and Nigerian cohort in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday.

Brady said the programme would equip journalists and content creators to improve their reporting on science, innovation and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, climate risk, biomedical innovation, the circular economy and electronic waste.

He said, “The UK MEET Fellowship is a programme for science journalists and content creators from Ghana and Nigeria to strengthen and inspire their reporting on science, innovation, and emerging technologies, focusing on wide-ranging topics from artificial intelligence and climate risk to biomedical innovation, the circular economy and e-waste.”

According to him, evidence-based science journalism has become increasingly important amid the spread of misinformation, rapid technological changes and complex global challenges.

“Evidence-based, trusted science journalism has never been more essential. In a world of rapid technological change, misinformation and increasingly complex global challenges, our policymakers, leaders, and educators need accurate, accessible reporting that helps them understand what's at stake, ask informed questions and make sound decisions,” he said.

Brady added that accessible science reporting could help build public trust in research and connect scientific discoveries with the communities expected to benefit from them.

He disclosed that the Ghanaian fellows began their training in Accra on Monday, while the programme would move to Abuja, Nigeria, the following week.

He also said selected fellows would have the opportunity to visit Imperial College London in December to meet researchers and tour its facilities.

In an earlier email notifying Akogun of his selection, the programme organisers said the fellowship attracted more than 500 applications from journalists and content creators across Nigeria and Ghana.

The organisers said each eligible application was independently assessed by two reviewers, with 13 per cent of applicants selected.

They said Akogun’s application stood out because of his reporting track record, clear editorial perspective and proposed story idea.

The Nigerian residential programme is scheduled to hold in Abuja from October 18 to 24, 2026. Activities will include engagements with researchers working on artificial intelligence, climate and health technology, as well as practical sessions on verifying emerging technology claims, investigating data and developing publishable story pitches.

The fellowship will also provide opportunities for participants to build professional networks with science and technology reporters across the region.

According to the organisers, fellows who demonstrate strong progress in developing rigorous story pitches during the Abuja residential may be considered for a knowledge exchange programme in London in late November.

The UK MEET Fellowship is part of efforts to strengthen science communication and improve public understanding of technological developments and their implications for society.

World Sight Day: 400,000+ Beneficiaries, One Priceless Gift

World Sight Day: 400,000+ Beneficiaries, One Priceless Gift

A child can't read, a trader struggles to recognise a customer, and an older person needs help finding their way home. When it becomes hard to see, it also becomes difficult to learn, earn, and live independently. Sometimes an eye test, glasses, or prompt treatment can help. But what happens when that care isn't available?

That is the need First City Monument Bank (FCMB) and the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation (TCF) set out to address when they launched Priceless Gift of Sight in 2009. By July 2024, the programme had provided free eye care to over 400,000 Nigerians, including eye tests, optical services, surgeries, and disease management.

Last week’s World Sight Day commemoration brought the next challenge into focus: how to make care accessible to more people—and keep it available.

FCMB held a roundtable meeting with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, through the National Eye, Ear and Sensory Functions Health Programme, and TCF to discuss partnerships and sustainable funding.

The task is practical. Eye tests need to lead to treatment. Clinics need skilled people and functioning equipment. Patients need support to complete their care.

After more than 15 years of partnership, the goal remains close to everyday life: helping more people see a lesson, serve a customer or find their way home.

BREAKING: FG Announces 30-Day Discount On NNPC Petrol

BREAKING: FG Announces 30-Day Discount On NNPC Petrol

Bola Tinubu Bola Tinubu Access Services
The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), with public transport operators to receive priority under the arrangement.Shop African Art

Politics Nigeria reports that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this on Thursday at a press briefing on fuel prices and subsidy-related issues in Abuja.

Oyedele explained that the measure was not a return to petroleum subsidy but an arrangement through which the government would make petrol available at cost for the period.

“We are offering a discount on petrol dispensed by NNPC limited for the next 30 days in the first instance with priority for public transporters nationwide. So, it’s not a subsidy, government is just saying we sell to you at cost,” the minister said.

The announcement followed growing pressure from organised labour over the impact of rising petrol prices and transportation costs on workers and households across the country.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress had demanded an immediate reduction in the price of petrol, a nationwide wage award for workers and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage.

In an Independence Day statement signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the NLC warned that Nigerians were facing what it described as a worsening survival crisis.

The union said persistent inflation had significantly reduced the purchasing power of workers, while higher petrol and transport costs had contributed to increases in the prices of food, school fees, rent and other basic necessities.Track Exec Orders

“We stand at the crossroads of a full-scale survival crisis. The real value of wages has been devoured by structural inflation. Petrol now sells at ₦1,430 per litre or higher in major cities and far more in remote areas,” the NLC said.

The labour union also revisited the Federal Government’s decision to remove petrol subsidy in May 2023, describing the resulting increase in fuel prices as a “systematic assault on the working class.”

It questioned the government over the use of funds saved from the subsidy removal, arguing that Nigerians had yet to see the infrastructure and social services it said were promised as part of the reform.Shop African Art

“Government claimed subsidy removal would free up resources for infrastructure and social services. Three years later, petrol prices have multiplied several times over, yet the promised infrastructure and social services remain mirages. Where exactly did the subsidy savings go? Nigerians deserve an answer, and they deserve it now,” the NLC said.

The union further criticised the country’s continued dependence on imported refined petroleum products despite Nigeria’s status as Africa’s largest oil producer.

According to the NLC, dependence on imported products had exposed Nigerians, particularly workers, to fluctuations in international oil prices and intensified the pressure created by higher fuel costs.

The union identified a reduction in petrol prices as its first priority, arguing that transportation was one of the major channels through which increases in fuel prices translated into broader inflation.

“Without cutting this chain, any effort to ease the suffering of the people is futile,” it said.

Beyond fuel prices, the NLC demanded the immediate implementation of a nationwide wage award for workers across the federal, state and local governments.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele

It argued that the measure should be treated as an emergency response to declining real incomes rather than a welfare gesture.

“A wage award is not charity. It is an emergency intervention against the collapse of real income,” the union said.

The Federal Government’s latest announcement, however, comes against the backdrop of President Bola Tinubu’s continued defence of his administration’s economic reforms and rejection of calls for the restoration of petrol subsidy.

Tinubu, in his 66th Independence Day address last Thursday, maintained that the reforms introduced by his administration were producing results and argued against reversing the subsidy removal policy.Access Services

Upon assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu announced the removal of petrol subsidy as part of a broader package of economic reforms. The policy was followed by a sharp increase in the price of petrol and subsequent pressure on household incomes and transportation costs.

Atiku flays Tinubu’s desperate reintroduction of fuel subsidy, says move election driven
Mr Atiku restated his commitment to making life affordable again.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the Federal Government’s proposed 30-day fuel discount at NNPC stations, describing it as a desperate, temporary gesture that cannot repair the damage caused by the crushing cost of fuel.

In a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku said the Tinubu administration’s attempt to dangle a fuel subsidy as bait for Nigerians was reckless, disgraceful and scandalous.

He said the same government had watched Nigerians endure excruciating hardship without offering meaningful relief. Now, as the election draws closer, President Tinubu is dangling a temporary discount at the very epicentre of the cost-of-living crisis that has tormented households and businesses.

“Atiku totally rejects this calendar-scheduled, election-laced subsidy package. Nigerians are not fools to be offered a month of discounted fuel after years of punishing prices and then expected to forget the hardship when the discount expires. This is shameless and heartless,” he said.

Atiku said the proposed 30-day discount was not an economic plan but a political bandage on a wound the government had helped create.

“What happens on Day 31? Nigerians wake up to the same brutal prices, the same punishing transport fares and the same rising cost of food. The government cannot manufacture relief for one month and expect Nigerians to applaud while the hardship remains,” he said.

He noted that the offer is limited to NNPC stations, while the government has yet to state how much motorists will save per litre or guarantee that any savings for transport operators will be passed on to passengers through lower fares.

The former vice president said the administration’s sudden reversal on this sensitive social welfare issue was itself an admission of guilt over the hardship Nigerians have endured. It also exposed the weakness of the government’s repeated claims that meaningful relief was impossible.

“This volte-face proves that the production-support proposal I have advanced is workable, achievable and not complicated. The Tinubu government and its spin doctors have tried to make it sound impossible, yet they are now reaching for a temporary subsidy-style intervention because the pain has become impossible to ignore,” Mr Atiku said.

He reiterated his proposal for capped and budgeted production support tied to fuel refined in Nigeria, with safeguards to ensure that the benefit reaches consumers and supports local refining.

“Nigerians need lasting relief, not a countdown to the return of hardship. Tinubu’s government cannot spend years telling Nigerians to endure, then offer 30 days of relief and call it a solution,” he said.

Mr Atiku restated his commitment to making life affordable again.

“Tinubu made life expensive. I will make life affordable again.”

BREAKING: DRONES LOCATE KIDNAPPERS' HIDEOUT OF ABDUCTED NYSC MEMBERS IN IMO BUT MINES PLANTED AROUND THE AREA!

The Imo State Commissioner of Police has broken silence on the search for the abducted NYSC members.

HIS WORDS:

"We have located the kidnappers' hideout with drones. But mines are planted around the area."

Let that sink in.

Technology has found them. Drones have seen them. But the enemy has booby-trapped the ground. They are not just hiding. They are waiting. They are prepared. They are daring us to come.

But hear this: they may have planted mines. They may have dug trenches. They may have set traps. But they cannot hide from the Nigerian security forces forever.

To the kidnappers you can run. You can trap the ground. But you cannot trap justice. We are coming. And when we come, there will be no escape.

This is not just a rescue mission. This is a statement. Nigeria will not abandon its children to criminals.

STAY STRONG. STAY HOPEFUL.

TRAGEDY AT THE BURIAL IN ALETO TODAY.

TRAGEDY AT THE BURIAL IN ALETO TODAY.

What was supposed to be a peaceful burial ceremony at Aleto, Eleme, suddenly turned into a sad and shocking incident.

The Resident Pastor of Redeemed Church, Aleto, Deacon Steve Eyo, was preaching at the burial ceremony.

He was preaching with a lot of energy and speaking clearly.

Everyone in attendance estimated to be above 300 persons were all quiet and paying attention to him.

Topic: The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond.

The pastor spoke about the fact that death is certain and cannot be avoided.

That death is like going to the market.
He said in his message...Some people leave the market early, while others stay until late. In the same way, some people die early, while others live longer.

That death can come when we least expect it.

The pastor started preaching at about 1:10 p.m. At about 1:25 p.m., while he was still preaching, he suddenly collapsed when he was concluding the message.

His fall happened right in front of everyone at stage of concluding his message,  at the last minute of the message.

At first, some people thought he was demonstrating how suddenly death can happen, because he had just been talking about death.

But we soon realised that it was a serious situation.

He was quickly taken to the back while the church choir and ministers gathered around him and prayed. Some people with medical knowledge also gave him first aid.

Unfortunately, his condition became worse.

A medical person reportedly said that his breathing had stopped.

He was then rushed to the nearest hospital in the same ambulance that had been hired to carry the remains of the deceased.

It was a very painful and shocking moment for everyone present.

Before the incident, the pastor had said that the burial was a reminder that death is not the end, because judgment comes after death.

He also encouraged everyone to number their days and live wisely.

His last words before the fall "Number your days and prepare,  for it can happen anytime,  then he fell down with the microphone landing on floor with a loud sound.

Rushing him to the clinic,  he was confirmed dead and taken to the mortuary.

It is still like a drama to everyone in attendance.

Comments: Death is a reality for everyone irrespective of your status; whether you are a man or woman, believer or non believer, rich or poor, highly or lowly place, known or unknown.

It has no respect for anyone. When it comes visiting, it cares less whether you are prepared or not, with no resistance from you, no matter who you are!

When you read this, you may try to reject it, that it is not your portion, it is a matter of time before your portion will come, understand this and have peace.

Make use of the moment, that is your portion that is sure,  because tomorrow is not promised and it may never come!

In a statement dated October 3, CDWR alleged that Task Force operatives stormed Shomorin Street, off Union Road, around Cement Bus Stop, Dopemu, on September 25 and impounded the motorcycles. The group said the residents were not riding on an expressway or any restricted route when the motorcycles were seized.

The Campaign Democratic and Workers Rights (CDWR) has accused the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, popularly known as the Task Force, of invading a residential street in Dopemu and seizing four motorcycles belonging to residents.

According to CDWR, three of the motorcycles have registration numbers PKA-520QM, AKM-691QL and LAR-987VF, while details of the fourth motorcycle were unavailable.

The organisation alleged that when the owners went to the Task Force office in Oshodi to recover their motorcycles, they were allegedly asked to pay N400,000 for each motorcycle.

This, according to the group, amounted to N1.6million for the four motorcycles.

The CDWR National Publicity Secretary, Chinedu Bosah, described the alleged seizure and demand as an abuse of power and called for the immediate release of the motorcycles.

The group said the incident represented a departure from the Task Force’s stated enforcement focus on restricted routes.

The Task Force has in recent weeks intensified enforcement against commercial motorcycle operations on highways, bridges, Bus Rapid Transit corridors and other restricted routes.

The Task Force Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, said in September that the agency would intensify what he described as lawful enforcement against Okada operations on restricted routes, street obstructions and other activities that threaten public safety.

In August, the agency also said it had impounded 66 commercial motorcycles during an enforcement operation across parts of Lagos Island, alleging that the operators were riding on restricted routes.

However, CDWR alleged that the task force was now extending its operations into residential streets.

“This appears to be a new tactic,” the group said, alleging that after public criticism of the agency’s activities on highways, its operatives had moved into community streets to seize motorcycles and vehicles.

The group also linked the alleged incident to the wider economic hardship faced by residents, citing high fuel prices, housing costs, education and healthcare expenses.

CDWR demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the four motorcycles and an end to what it described as the invasion of community streets to seize residents’ vehicles.

It also called on the Lagos State government to summon Akerele and his officers to explain the operation and take disciplinary action against any operative found to have unlawfully impounded the motorcycles.

The organisation further demanded a transparent investigation into the alleged N400,000 payment requested for each motorcycle and accountability for anyone found to have extorted the residents.

CDWR warned that continued incidents of this nature could lead to resistance by affected communities and urged the Lagos State government to intervene.

The Task Force has previously defended its enforcement operations, saying it acts on complaints, intelligence and petitions concerning activities it considers to violate Lagos State laws.

In September, the agency also urged members of the public to report anyone demanding money in its name.

Mass Exit Hits NGIJ as Members Reject Aliagan’s Emergence Over Multiple Voting

Mass Exit Hits NGIJ as Members Reject Aliagan’s Emergence Over Multiple Voting

Members Demand Bolaji Be Declared Winner

The Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ) has been plunged into an electoral crisis following Wednesday’s virtual election in which the incumbent National President, Abdulrahman Aliagan, was declared re-elected by 24 votes to 23, amid protests over irregularities in the voting process.

The disputed one-vote margin has become the centre of the controversy, with aggrieved members insisting that two unauthorised votes be removed from the final tally and Comrade Israel Bolaji, popularly known as Bashorun, declared the winner.

Scores of members have resigned from the Guild in protest, while others have rejected the outcome and called for a review of the disputed votes.

The crisis has also led to the resignation of the newly elected National Public Relations/Welfare Officer, Mr Kehinde Adeleye, who, despite winning his own contest, rejected the outcome of the presidential election.

Adeleye said the election was compromised by multiple voting, claiming that Aliagan and an ally, Oyewale Oyelola, were allowed to cast votes through their respective media organisations in a manner that contravened the Guild’s longstanding voting practice.

According to him, the NGIJ had, over the past eight years, operated a system in which each media organisation was entitled to one vote.
He said the arrangement was breached during Wednesday’s election, giving the incumbent and his ally an unfair advantage.

“NGIJ elections in the last over eight years of its history have always operated a one-vote-to-one-media-house system. However, curiously, Abdulrahman Aliagan, as the outgoing President seeking re-election, vetoed his employee and those of his close ally, who was also seeking re-election, to vote in the last election.

“This caused him to win with one vote. Members protested massively and called for the two votes to be cancelled and Comrade Israel Bolaji, popularly known as Bashorun, to be declared the winner.”

The protesters argued that removing the two disputed votes from the 24-23 result would fundamentally alter the outcome and give Bolaji the majority.

The development triggered a wave of resignations from the Guild, including that of a former National President, Ayo Mojoyin.
Also reacting to the development, Bolaji rejected the election outcome, describing the process as “a joke taken too far”.

He alleged that Aliagan exerted pressure on members of the Electoral Committee to permit multiple voting in a manner that favoured his candidacy and that of his ally.

“Aliagan is deluding himself about being re-elected. How can you win an election when half of the members have walked out and resigned from the association over the conduct and outcome of the election?

“This clearly shows the depth of the crisis and the rejection of the process by a significant number of members.”

Bolaji further said members raised concerns about multiple voting before the election was concluded, but the complaints were ignored.

“From the build-up to the election, there was too much pressure on the Mr Lateef Owodunni-led Electoral Committee by the incumbent President, Abdulrahman Aliagan, who was hell-bent on influencing the process, having lost goodwill due to poor performance in the last two years.

“He was publicly advocating for a system that allows only himself and his Vice President, Oyewale Oyelola, to enjoy a multiple-voting process through his employees smuggled into the voters’ register.

“Upon realising this, members insisted the swearing-in should not go on. Also, there were other irregularities recorded in the election. Some members complained about not voting while the electronic process showed they voted, casting further doubt and lack of credibility on the election.”

The disputed election followed months of internal campaigning during which members expressed concerns about the performance of the outgoing administration under Aliagan.

The latest development has created uncertainty over the future direction of the Guild, with aggrieved members demanding accountability, transparency and a review of the electoral process.
