Two die, many injured in Lagos stampede over policemen raid
AT LEAST two persons died while many others were injured during a stampede that ensued in Happy Land Estate, Ajah, Lagos State, when some police officers allegedly invaded the community in broad daylight, yesterday.
Eyewitnesses said the two persons, Gafaru Buraimoh and Yekini Amao Suberu, were hit in the rain of bullet that rent the area as the officers were shooting in all directions.
According to the eyewitnesses, those lucky not to be cut down or shot dead sustained various degrees of injuries during the pandemonium.
Although the details of what led to the alleged shooting were still sketchy, Police Public Relations Officer of Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident in a statement issued yesterday evening.
According to the statement, the shooting incident involved men of Ajah Police Division.
“At about noon on Tuesday, December 06, 2022, there was shooting incident involving men of Ajah Division, around Happy Land Estate, Ajah. But we are yet to receive official report of any casualty. Those behind the shooting were immediately disarmed and detained as a full-scale investigation has commenced. The command gives assurances that the already commenced investigation into the immediate and remote circumstances leading to the shooting will be brought to a speedy and conclusive end, while equally ensuring that justice is served,” the statement reads in part.
