Police confirm two dead in Lagos State church stampede – The Eagle Online
Two people were killed in a stampede at a prayer service held at a church on Ewenla Street, off Ikotun-Idimu Road in Lagos.
According to a member who attended the prayer service hosted by Pastor Odekunle Epaphras Prayer Ministries, also known as Olorun Ojiji, which takes place on the third Thursday of each month, the service typically draws a large crowd of worshippers.
She goes on to say that the trouble began when the crowd waiting for the second service scrambled to enter the venue immediately after the first service ended, without allowing the first set of worshippers to leave, resulting in a stampede.
Confirming the incident, Lagos state command spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin stated that five unconscious people were rushed to the hospital near the scene of the stampede, three of whom were resuscitated and two of whom were declared dead.
Other members claim that when the church first began hosting the service at the expansive facility, it only held one service. However, as attendance grew rapidly, the number of services was increased to three.
The host, Pastor Odekunle Epaphras, was immediately arrested and taken to the Ikotun Police Station before being released on bail.
